Hodedah Kitchen Island with Spice Rack, Towel Rack & Drawer, Black with Beech Top

Hodedah Kitchen Island with Spice Rack, Towel Rack & Drawer, Black with Beech Top

Read reviews that mention:

2.1 stars for quality.
0.1 stars for ease of assembly.

This thing is flimsy, but adequate for my needs. But assembly is a nightmare. As one reviewer pointed out, "You might as well just go buy the raw materials and design it yourself."

* You will need THREE screwdrivers, not ONE as described (spade, phillips, hex).

* You will need a drill because 16 holes are NOT PRE-DRILLED AT ALL (for casters).

* Many holes that ARE pre-drilled are improperly sized or positioned. Be prepared to do a lot of hammering & cursing to get components fitted together.

* Wood dowels provided are loose and fall out of pre-drilled holes onto the floor during assembly.

Be aware that the instruction manual is provided for amusement only. Instructions are often contradictory or flat wrong.

Language is a laughably quaint approximation of English. Don't waste time trying to read it. Just compare components to the pictures and you'll have to figure out yourself how to put this thing together. Eventually. Allocate about four times the amount of time you'd spend assembling a similar unit from Ikea.

This product was exactly the size and fit we were looking for. Had a little nook in our pantry that we wanted for our tea and coffee. Had wheels so we can roll it out to dining room when having guest or parties. Assembly took a little patience and about and hour but not too difficult. looks good. We left the towel bar off one end so it would fit where we needed it and that did not effect stability or assembly. Four stars are just because quality of wood is not great had a couple of imperfections, but when your looking to do things on the cheap I don't expect high quality.
Picture 1 are the tools I needed to assemble this (I have a lot of tools). Picture 2 is the box that arrived. Some thin styrofoam padding, but the contents were in in generally good shape. Picture 3 shows the poor alignment of the doors. With plastic pins as hinges, this is to be expected. (I will put some real hinges on later). Also: Instructions don't tell you when to install the doors. Do it BEFORE you install the bottom. Another issue: Install the top Cross-brace (with door magnets) BEFORE you install the side pieces. It was a real pain to do it after, per instructions. Another issue: Missing a dowel. Not a big deal, but annoying. Picture 4 shows the drawer AFTER I removed it, measured it, and then drilled holes and installed it right. The pre-drilled holes were way, WAY off. Also, bottom caster mounting holes were missing. I used a 1/32 drill for a pilot and drove the screws with driver set to 5 ounces torque. Even that low force 'spun' a few screws in the weak MDF. Solution: Remove screw and insert pieces of wooden toothpick. Then reinstall the screws. Final 2 pictures: It is usable and does not look too bad. Overall: It functions and is okay for the price, even though it was a pain to assemble. Would I buy it again? No. It's okay for the price, but I'd go for higher quality (and price) next time. For the price, it's okay though and I will use it for as long as it looks decent enough.
Ok this is a HONEST review PLEASE READ!
I almost didn’t buy this because of all the reviews I read. First of all this thing is great for the price. Installation is very easy. Maybe because I’m a contractor but I feel like even a kid could put this together if they had common sense. TAKE YOUR TIME!

It did not come with glue so I bought a small thing of wood glue, glue is essential to the success of installation. Glue everything! As for the people complaining about the doors being crooked it’s because they did not square it up properly before installing the backing. If you don’t know how to square up something YOUTUBE IT! Also I see a ton of people had problems with the pre drilled holes lining up. Either I got really lucky or again these people writing these reviews have no idea what they are doing. Which honestly is embarrassing considering the simplicity of this. Now as for the condition after shipping again I got lucky. Not a scratch on it. Packaging was Mediocre but it was fine. It’s not made to be in the middle of a room. It’s made to go against a wall unless your ok with a little of the particle board showing on the two corners of the counter top. All the parts came with spares. I am a professional in building things and I give this 5 stars. Don’t listen to reviews of people that screw up and blame the product. I almost didn’t buy this because of the bad reviews. Glad I did and I’d buy again a hundred times. GOOD LUCK, take your time, glue!!! And square it up before the backing!!!
Extremely disappointed with this purchase. It arrived quicker than expected, but the the spice rack didnt fit together properly due to the holes being improperly drilled, and the top was damaged. We ordered a second one because we had the other pieces in the series and we really like this one to. The second one arrived quickly as well, was not damaged and went together quickly. HOWEVER, now it has black stains on it that wont come out. and if you scrub them they just get bigger. This should not happen. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this piece of furniture.

Update: its been about 9 months, the piece is falling apart, the drawer handle has broken off, the drawer and cabinets do not close properly, all the wheels have broken off the bottom, extremely poor construction, DO NOT BUY
I ordered the white stand and received the wood colored. also, there is a flaw on one of the doors (I turned it to the inside) and also a flaw on the corner of the top ( I have been able to cover it with a clothe. I found it very hard to follow the manufactures directions when putting it together. also to add insult, I was on line a week or so later only to find this particular stand had been reduced by 42.00. all together this has not been a good experience.

thank you for asking

I needed more kitchen space and counter top with my apartment being so long and small, which i love, so I bought this unite and OMG what a life saver. All i need to cook in one space, you can move it as needed, has wheels that lock. I am going to add a thin butchers block on the top to protect it since i am using it for cooking but other then that it works amazing for my needs.
To start the instructions were garbage and it doesnt come with the tools required to build it.
They sent the wrong colour and ran out of stock of the one i actually ordered so i got stuck with this and ill paint it later. To rectify this problem i was given $20 of basically useless credit towards amazon sold and fulfilled items only.
Its not finished and ready for assembly because i needed to mark and drill holes for the wheels which are cheap plastic and wont likley hold its weight for long.
The drawer might hold something but not much and considering the size of the drawer its just a waste of good shelf space.
The doors are damaged out of the box.
Its excessively large for what it is.
Ive had my share of cheap furniture but this was a bit more than the one at ikea and far below par as far as im concerned.
The box was badly damaged and wrapped with a roll of tape to hold it together.
And on top of that i got to carry it 3 flights because the driver who had a dolly even wouldn't.
I bought it because i dont have much counter space in my kitchen and itll work fine for that even though the colour is wrong.
I purchased this island because of the price and the look. When I received it, I was disappointed by the quality of the materials (particularly the handles which are a flimsy plastic); however, I decided I'd keep it and put it together considering the price was good. I'm moderately handy, but these instructions were a nightmare. There were multiple steps where it wasn't clear which hole was supposed to be used. It didn't help that several of the parts were labelled with the wrong number. On top of that, one part that was supposed to have a pre-drilled holes was missing the pre-drilled holes. I contacted Hodedah for a replacement part, to their credit, they did mail one immediately. Despite my growing frustration, I decided I'd continue trying to put this together. However, when I finally neared completion, I realized that the drawer was too narrow for the track so it would fall out of the track. This was the final straw, and I returned the product.

On top of all the construction issues, I have some other serious issues, the base of the drawer is incredibly flimsy, I'm sure it would break. You are required to nail in finishing nails in one part. The plywood is quite thin so it's likely you'll crack it. I also have to assume that there are a number of fake reviews posted, I've seen five-star reviews saying they built this quickly and easily, I just can't believe that.
Great value for the money; can be used as something temporary or put somewhere with low usage. Looks ok - but mine arrived damaged. It was not noticeable enough that I didn't care (got this for $160cad).

The instructions are legible at best - often requires lots of squinting to ensure the holes in the diagram match with what you're doing. It took about 2.5 hours to assemble it with another person - but if I were to get 2, it may take take the quoted 60-70 mins. I recommend reading the instructions multiple times - don't read as you assemble because of the below.

This is a PAIN to assemble as many of the regular methods to assemble furniture aren't used. In their place, you get loads of screws to put into 50% pre-drilled holes. If they're not pre-drilled, it's a pain to make sure you're doing it right. THE DOORS ARE THE WORST OH MAN. It took 30 mins just to install the doors as they weren't on hinges and there were no predrilled holes into the door. Just has to drill while in position and hope it doesn't do the things doors do and you know... move? Glad they said it's the last step. If you mess it up, good luck with the newly screwed in holes?
I bought this product to create more counter anot passible to put bacnd cupboard space, which it did. i enjoyed the extra counter top at first, and extra space. However it did not seem to stand up to daily use and occaisional moving. First one of the wheels fell of on the spice rack side, broken and not possible to put back. Then the other broke and the surface was no longer horizontal. Then one of the door broke off and we have been trying to find a way to put it back on. I would say that overall, I would not buy this product again. Mavis Kent
