Turns out great in the end but there were headaches along the way.
Pros:
1. Finished bed is sturdy. A-1 most important.
2. The slats are close enough together that you won't need additional support if using a memory foam mattress which needs to breathe. Follow the guidelines for mattress thickness, for safety up top and for head clearance/safety down below.
3. Delivery was prompt, and I received a call when they were on the way. The bed arrived in four boxes (open carefully to keep the styrofoam from getting messy)
Cons:
1. The screws have a hex shaped top and have been painted white. The paint makes it hard for an allen wrench to fit well into the grooves of the screw. I recommend 1)using an allen wrench with a real handle and not the one provided and 2) using a hammer to knock the allen wrench deeper into the screw. Otherwise you risk stripping the screw head and killing your fingers.
2. This bed uses bolts that screw into metal nuts that you push into holes (not the less sturdy ikea type but an actual nut and bolt). Several of these, I think 9 in total, did not line up easily. The best way I found was to ease the nut into the board at the same time you are inserting the bolt into the other board, so both pieces make contact immediately while sliding in. If you just drop both in you'll be trying and trying and trying to match them up. Trust me, I learned that on the first one. Put this bed together loosely and then go back and tighten everything.
3. The ladder has several rungs. All rungs have dowels and some rungs are also screwed in. One of the rungs that is not screwed (and it's the one step you really have to use) in does not fit tightly and wiggles each time it's used. That movement over time will create stress on the dowels and they will break. I took the ladder apart and used wood glue on all dowels. The ladder won't come apart now but it's more important that it's strong.
All in all, it turned out great and I would buy it again. As a side note, there is just over 11" of clearance under the bed if you need it for storage space. For a full sized bed there are 4 support beams running down the middle of the bed so you will have to limit the size of bins/boxes.
The bed looks nice, seems well made and super easy to put together. It is comfortable. I like that I can sit on it without my head hitting the top bunk same as the top bunk to ceiling. The top rails are nice and high, I feel confident that my child will not fall off while sleeping. You can put the steps any where you would like and it's easy to move around. Seems solid even for my wild kids but I will update my comment if I run into any problems. SO FAR Im happy.
Amazing bed. Took my husband and his best friend to build it within an hour using a cordless drill instead of the allen key thats included! Very sturdy, such a bargain price! Shipped fast & perfect condition! My 3 girls absolutely love their new "big girl" bedroom!
We have 2 little girls. Our oldest just turned 5 and the baby is 1. We wanted to condense their sleeping arrangements to allow more space in their room. The baby is still in a crib, but since we recently moved, I figured, why not. Our oldest had outgrown her toddler bed anyway.
The set came in multiple boxes. All of which are labeled on the outside as to what they are. The directions are fairly clear. I recommend putting the full size bed together first. But a benefit of this set is you can set aside the top or bottom if it's not needed yet.
The quality is decent and it is a sturdy set. I did find that the holes for the full size slat set did not line up properly and I had to improvise. I was also missing 1, just 1 machined screw. I was able to get what I needed from my local Ace hardware.
This brand is sold on many sites, keep your eye for the best deal. Also, the manufacturers website sells directly to consumers.
Mattresses are not included.
Probably have bought a thousand items on Amazon and have never left a review. This bunk bed was so perfect, I felt compelled to write something. First of all, it came by a freight company which handled the process very efficiently and professionally with excellent communication. The bed was packaged very well and despite some blemishes on the box, the styrofoam and protective wrap inside left every piece inside in mint condition. Directions were well-written with excellent diagrams and the hardware was all enclosed in it's own box. The guy who wrote these instructions deserves an award - complete opposite of so many of these do-it-yourself-furniture-products where the directions seem written by some completely incompetent person. They even given you one extra of every single piece of hardware included in the event that if something happens along the way (avoids the 2 week wait for a replacement when dealing with someone like IKEA), you'll still be alright. As far as the quality of the bed, it is superb. All hardwood pieces that are well painted and sturdy. Complete opposite of the bed I bought and returned from WalMart 2 weeks prior that was almost the same price, but of unacceptable quality in every respect. This bed was easy to assemble in less than 2 hours by someone of my limited mechanical ability and only required assistance (from a very petite woman) lifting the top bunk onto the lower bunk. All the pieces and hardware fit together squarely and perfectly. In the end, the whole thing was a total success and my 8 and 5 year olds love the bed. Solid work Atlantic Furniture!
