These are very great markers for furniture or anything that you want to touch up. My daughter spilled something on my table which took off the finish. My cats also scratched my baseboards. I'm giving four stars just because the oak color did not match perfectly but am happy with the results. Looks much better. it's also fun to go around the house and see how many scratches you have that you can touch up and it looks much better afterwards.
Despite our consistent efforts, it took almost a year to teach our new dog to not jump up on the back door. And as you can see in the first picture, he managed to do a lot of scratching. That's why I bought this marker kit, to repair those scratches. I used "oak," a lighter color, on the scratches. I did have to go over them again to completely cover them. That's what you see in the second picture, and it took me about 10 minutes total. I bought the kit with the wax crayons as I hoped to fill in the scratches too but that didn't work. I read in another review that it's possible but takes a lot of work. Unless I'm looking for the defects, I no longer notice the scratches (and mind you, these are at eye level) so this did the job I wanted. I bought the bigger pack because I have white painted dining room furniture with scratches. I tried the white marker on a chipped spot. I put on coat after coat, and then tried the white crayon. Well, if you're not looking for the chip, at least it's not as obvious but it didn't fill in the color as I would have hoped.
I am over the moon with this purchase. We have some scratches on our wood floor and wood dining table that have been driving me nuts for years. I finally decided to do something about them and ordered these. Scratches gone--as if they were never there (and some of them were pretty large!). I don't know how this product compares to other products on the market, but I know that they worked for me. I erred on the side of choosing a lighter color when there wasn't a direct match, which seemed to be the right decision. The instructions say to use a soft cloth to wipe up excess immediately, but I might also have a soft cloth that you've dampened *just a little.* It might wipe off more than you intended, but it seemed to lead to better blending. I would definitely purchase again.
This is my second time buying the Katzco Furniture Repair Kit Wood Markers. I originally bought the 13 piece set back in April and was really amazed how well the product worked. Since I have some gray and white cabinetry in my house, I decided to purchase the 17 piece set which included those two colors. Unfortunately, the white and gray touch-ups did not meet and exceed my expectations. My recommendation is for those who need to make stain touch-ups to buy the 13 piece set. You're better off buying actual touch-up paint for gray and white painted surfaces.
All the pen colors are way darker than my golden oak stain. WAY DARKER! None of the pens are light colored except the white of course. I even tried to put a bit of the lightest brown pen on and color it lighter with the white while it was still wet (kind of mixing the white and brown). That worked lamely. The crayon style ones leave a sheen on unvarnished wood making the area it is on stick out like a sore thumb, while it will not apply at all on varnish (smooth surfaces). The crayons just slide over smooth surfaces without leaving any coloring behind. Also, none of these colors comes close to matching my golden oak stain. Golden oak stain is a VERY common color that many people have and none match that color. The only thing to use is one of those color mixing paint on liquid repair stile if you ever want a match. It would be a miracle if you actually got a good match from these!
The package suggests Maple is the lightest, but I found it too warm and had better results with Oak for my lightest wood. Highly recommend using something like a Clorox wipe for wiping off the excess color instead of just water. It goes on really dark, so I let it sit for a second and then wiped most of it away to leave a very light stain. Does a decent job providing color within the scratch so it's not as obvious.
The wax sticks are joke. They do nothing.
This was exactly what I needed. I recently inherited my mom and dad’s bedroom set that they purchased the day they returned from their honeymoon over 70 years ago which had some scratches and marks that needed to be repaired. As I wanted to keep as much of the original finish as possible I decided to try your pens and actually found the perfect match with the “oak” pen. As a bonus, I tried a few of the other colors on some of my other furniture and again found matches! I can’t recommend these enough!!
The application took a little practice but the end results were a huge improvement. The colors are slightly off from the cap color so I recommend testing in an inconspicuous area, also they show up darker on raw areas of wood. If you have a deep scratch fill with the crayon first.
Another tip is to work in small strokes and wipe with a lint free cloth as you go, I used an old eye glass cleaning cloth. Only negative for me was that I needed a more yellow tone to match some older chairs, the colors lean warmer-reddish.
