The meat probe just works... Which is more than can be said about most other ones that I tried. If you are looking for a meat probe that has Wi-Fi connection capabilities, there isn't one better.
The app is very intuitive and visually appealing. Although their cook time predictions are often incorrect, the display is fantastic. I would like the ability to record notes about every cool I save, but other than that, the app is really nice.
I used these probes on at least 20 different cooks and in 3 different grills (Weber kettle, Weber Genesis, and a kamado) and I have had zero connectivity issues. I keep the hub within 20 feet of the grill and the prices stay connected. That was definitely not the case with some of the other more well known meat probes that has constant disconnections.
Another massive benefit is how thin the probe is. And although the probe is shorter than other probes, the temperature gauge (the metal portion) is actually the same length as the meater insert line. The only difference is the gauge to read the ambient temperature. Being so short, there are some errors with ambient temperature, because the guage is often affected by the meat. Still, it is mostly accurate.
I bought this looking to replace my old wired set up (which I've had to replace multiple probes on).
I cook a whole chicken or two, and multiple roasts, on my smoker every week... Plus a few things here and there.
This has been pretty fantastic. I can run to the store, or we can head to the local park on our bikes, and keep an eye on the cook. I get a 5 minute warning, which is enough to hop back on our bike and make it home in time to pull it off the grill.
Only negatives...
1) the estimated cooking times seem to be pretty inaccurate. Like, I get it. You don't always put in the size/weight of the meat, and different thicknesses and cuts take different amounts of times. Plus with Beef, you have the issue of some interesting named cuts that aren't listed (we use London Broils but you have to pick striploin). It gets more accurate as you get closer to being done, but the estimated time from the beginning can be off by a LOT.
2) we did a pork shoulder the other day. The last step is to wrap it in foil and keep cooking... I wrapped the probe inside the foil and my phone gave me no less than 25 alerts that there was a weak signal from the probe to the hub.
3) the hub REALLY needs to be able to charge multiple probes at once. We smoked that same shoulder and a London broil at once. I had to pull the probe that was fully charged and use it on the pork shoulder while I charged the 2nd probe and did the prep for the various cuts and smoker to have enough time for the London broil. This ONLY worked because the London broil is a short cook... Doing two pork shoulders? You likely won't be able to start then at the same time!!!
If you regularly cook one thing at a time and sometimes two... Or do shorter smokes/cooks, this is great. If you want to do two big briskets, or brisket and pork shoulder, or whatever... This can get a little tricky on timing.
Plus know that the most you can track, is 3 probes. So if you load up that smoker, no go here.
We purchased the thermometer for use with our 'Portable Solar Oven BBQ Cooker 4.5L Capacity'. It is the perfect combination and let's us cook by temperature instead of time without having to open the tube to check the food.
We have some issues with the app quitting in the middle of cooking or saying it was done well before reaching the temperature. The product packaging is excessive and 4x the size needed for a small product. Many companies are looking to be more environmentally conscious and reducing packaging waste. This one is not.
The recipes are excellent and worth 5 stars on their own! I would, however, like to see a serving quantity adjustment button like many web based recipes have since some of the recipes are family sized and there's just two of us. A print button would also be nice so I don't slop all over my tablet in the kitchen. (If there is one, i havent found it yet.) Instead I do screen captures to print.
I researched all these type wireless thermometers on YouTube. I found that this particular brand CHEF IQ is more of what is needed with the cook or chef in mind. It is the thinnest diameter probe I could find ,which is a must for thin cuts and fish. Most probes out there are bulky and more like a small broom stick which is not what you want. It is simple to set up and the app is well designed. There are so many features that it would take a week to list them all. It stores you history setting, loads of pre-programmed recipes and you can also program your own custom settings which is the feature I love best. The smart hub talks to you and lets you know all the info/data need for your perfect meal and I'm mean PERFECT! I'm a fanatic when it comes to perfectly cooked meals and this CHEF IQ nails it every time. Its such a relief to know your meals will become worry free with no panic if the desired temperatures are not met. I bought more of these CHEF IQs for family members because I was sooo impressed. Turn your meals into professional chef quality meals. I'm not impressed very easy but this is an amazing device. You'll thank yourself after you buy one.
