Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser, Grey

Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser, Grey

Read reviews that mention:

This dresser looks good, is heavy, and won’t tip. Unfortunately it was manufactured using highly toxic chemicals and is not safe for a child’s room. When I opened the box it was an overwhelming chemical smell that I thought would dissipate, but it never did, even a year later I would need to leave the window open. The thought of a child breathing this formaldehyde laden toxic stew while sleeping throughout their childhood is mortifying. I do not see how this is legal to sell, and ha, I see it actually *is* illegal to sell in California now, I wonder why... I don’t generally review, but the amount of time and stress this has caused over the past few years was not worth the few dollars saved over what it would have cost to buy more reputable furniture and I can’t believe the 4.5 star rating this has.

How I finally solved the smell issue was sealing all of the drawers, inside and out, with Zinsser B-I-N Ultimate Stain Blocker Shellac Primer. This primer will seal nearly anything, even this air quality disaster. In case anyone else makes the mistake of buying this wanted to leave a review with a potential solution. Again, not worth it, shame on Delta “Children” for selling a product designed for a child’s bedroom manufactured with dangerous chemicals.

This is a seriously solid (heavy, sturdy) dresser that looks nice when put together. However it is incredibly smelly, I have never bought a piece of furniture that basically smells like an open can of paint. It has been out of the box for 4 days and still smells rather strong, my hope is that this goes away by the time our baby is born. The smell makes me wonder about whether or not the paint used on the dresser is really non-toxic. Secondly, while the drawers are also very solid and rely on screws rather than glue to assemble (which is good), they are very short. The drawers stop about 3 inches short of the back of the dresser. I haven't idea why someone would design a dresser that way. It means you get a lot less storage per drawer and you have this huge gap in the back which it the perfect place for clothing to fall behind. I would return the dresser based on these two things if we hadn't already put it together. Would not purchase again, and would not recommend.
This is an AWESOME dresser!

Time to assemble - around 2hours (this includes un-packing and some cleaning-up).

When it first arrived the box had a HUGE dent and I was worried about the contents inside. But you can see from the photo it was VERY well packed. Everything was in great shape!

PROS -
- Easy to put together!
The directions were simple, all the parts where there and labeled VERY well (picture of the nuts / bolts, etc with labels)
- Sturdy and beautiful
Our plan is to use this for our baby and then as she grows, it will be her dresser! From the look and feel, this will last a VERY long time.
- Awesome Price
For what you get, the price is awesome. (note, we got this for ~230)

CONS - (had to be VERY nit-picky. And NONE of these were bad enough to lose a star, hence it keeping the 5star rating)
- Alan wrench
The it comes with an alan wrench. I felt at a few times they could of sized it differently to make it slightly nicer to use
- Hand screw driver
Yeah, so directions said to NOT use an electric screw driver. I quickly threw that idea out the window and grabbed my electric drill. My drill has a torque limiter on it, so I set it really low and adjusted as needed. This would of been painful to do w/o a drill. But I understand why they wanted you to do it that way. If you go full boar with a drill you'll probably split wood, etc.
- Uneven drawers
So this might just be how I put it together. But you'll notice the drawers are perfectly straight / aligned. I tried REALLY hard to put it together perfectly. This is just more of an OCD thing. It works perfectly and there are no problems.
This chest of drawers looks great in our bathroom which has no storage, and works well for us. But the odor from the finish was very strong at first and did not go away for months! I would not use in a baby’s room!!
It took my husband a while to put this together, but we love the results! Very sturdy and heavy piece of furniture, so no worries about baby tipping it over when he gets older - plus, it can be secured to the wall. The drawers glide smoothly and are big, nice and deep, and hold a TON of baby clothes! I'm currently using the top two drawers for clothes that currently fit him, the middle two for the next size up, and cloth diapers and burp cloths are in the bottom two -- but he should be able to use it when he's older, too. I can't see him needing a different dresser even when he's a teenager. The "dark chocolate" color is beautiful. We bought the changing table kit to go with this, too, and it works out very well.

EDIT: I've knocked my review from 5 stars down to 3, though I think it deserves more like 3 1/2. I'm also going to contact the company. This dresser has only been in use for approximately 5 months, and already the finish/paint is coming off.

Just as a follow-up, I did contact the company about the peeling finish. It has been at least a month since I emailed them, and I have received no response.

Second Update: It's been several months now since I contacted the company about the finish, and I never did get a response. I'm assuming I never will. The dresser has now been in use for about 11 months, and other than the finish issue, we still love it. I am concerned that our son will outgrow it, though. While it still holds a lot of clothes now, I don't know how practical this will be once he's in "big kid" clothes that take up more space. I guess we'll have to see. I'm planning on passing this down to our next child if/when we have one. If we don't, we'll probably just buy our son a bigger dresser when he's older.

I also kind of wish the dresser sat flush to the floor instead of on legs, so stuff (toys, clothes, diaper rash cream tubes, rogue wipes, etc) couldn't go underneath it.
