BUYER BEWARE
Yes many positive reviews but this is what happened to me. My Dog was eating this turkey and I would change our occasionally 6 months with the beef version for variety. Eating it fine then one day opened a new box of Turkey and he refused to eat it.... Honest Kitchen customer service DOES NOT EXIST they would not do anything at all - would not check into my issue - no refund - no nothing. Absolutely No customer service. My dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback they always eat with gusto ... I am worried there is either something wrong with batch or thuenchnaged ingredients. BUT the fact that Honest Kitchen could careless about my dog or me as a customer worries me. Then I find there are others who
Have had issues... no more Honest Kitchen. Don’t think manufacturer is “honest” they treated me
Very poorly and in fact became quiet beligerant to my concerns. DO NOT BUY this food. Plenty of great brands out there.
After much research into different types of dog food, I felt discouraged and began to feel I would have to home prepare the food. Then I discovered the Honest Kitchen brand. I priced all the items I would need to make the food myself and found Honest Kitchen's food was cheaper. Now they really had my attention. I began with a few samples from their direct website. My dogs ate it like it was a treat; a reaction I'd only previously received when feeding them salmon or peanut butter. So I shopped around for the best price and landed here on Amazon with the subscribe and save delivery.
I have tried two varieties so far, Keen turkey and Verve beef. One of my three dogs became disenchanted with the beef one and stopped eating it, despite my numerous attempts at coaxing her. However, they all love, love, love this turkey one. Winner, winner, turkey dinner. Personally, I also like to add a little salmon oil for their heart and skin health (I use the Grizzly brand). This is more affordable for me than purchasing the seafood Honest Kitchen variety.
Now here's how I like to make it. My 40lb dog gets a 1/2 cup (8oz) of food and my two 10lb dogs get 1/8 cup (2Tbsp/2oz). I then squirt in the appropriate amount of salmon oil. For the water, I like it hot, just below boiling. This makes the food form better and also smell better to the dogs, thus becoming more appetizing. The amount of water I put in is 50% more than the dry food, so 3/4 cup (12oz) for the larger dog and 3/8 cup (3Tbsp/3oz) for the little ones. Then I let it sit about 5 minutes to give it time to thicken and also cool down a bit. I test the temperature of the food before feeding it to them always.
Meanwhile, while I am doing this, three very eager dogs are driving me crazy. The sheepdog is crying the whole time as if waiting for the food is the worst punishment ever. The chihuahua is jumping up and scratching the back of my legs. The mini dachshund is barking demandingly and sometimes hops in circles. The entire circus act with the three of them is quite ridiculous. When they finally get their food, they go at it like crazy and lick their bowls clean. I guess that's a five star rating from them. It's a five star rating from me too!
This food was recommended by our new holistic veterinarian. We were very happy to discover such high quality food for our sweet labradoodle Amelia. We were shocked that Amelia became extremely ill after only four cups span over 3 days. We wanted to ease her into the new food. She acted as if she didn’t feel well Day one and two then day three she began vomiting profusely. The company was very responsive and issued an immediate refund. Amelia is not a dog with a sensitive stomach she is a good eater. Something is very wrong with the food. It could be a bad batch.
I wanted so badly for our American Cocker Spaniel to be able to eat this to replace dry kibble. However after following the manufacturer's feeding instructions and giving it a couple of weeks and having our dog heave several nasty, hard to clean up messes onto a sofa and a carpet I am giving up. On top of that going this way is considerably more expensive... The box is labeled as to imply it's equivalent to a 40 pound bag of kibble. It is not...it IS ABOUT 40 POUNDS AFTER YOU ADD WATER. But the caloric content is fractional compared to kibble.
I have waited a bit to write a review, but decided I should to warn dog parents about potential issues with this food. My 4 year old schnauzer, who has never had prior digestive issues, began occasionally throwing up after beginning to eat this food. I had already decided if he threw up one more time, I would quit the food, but devastatingly he became deathly ill before I got that chance. My dog developed Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) or Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome, as it is now called. He began having bloody diarrhea, but calling it diarrhea makes it sound like there was more than just blood to it. It was only blood. He was taken to the hospital immediately, but was in such bad shape that he had to have a plasma transfusion. His blood had thickened so much that his little heart was having trouble pumping it and he was extremely, extremely ill. He had an amazing team helping him and he has now fully recovered. Although they cannot directly link the illness with his food, his digestive issues began immediately after beginning to consume it. I am sure that it is totally fine for other dogs, but I wanted to tell my story in case it helped anyone else.
My dog started out liking it but ended up refusing to eat it probably be oz of the grain inside so I exchanged it for the grain free version called embark. He had embark for a year already and he loves it. Was trying out this grain version but no success. HK is the best food for your dog be oz it allows dogs to get most nutrition and its moist. Keeping dogs well hydrated.
My dog became very skinny after eating this for two weeks
Amazing food but the price has gone up by almost 30 dollars. I have even buying honest kitchen for my pugs for the last 4 years and I am shocked at the price now. Looking for alternatives because of it or I will make my own dog food.
Excellent product, my dogs didn't care for the Chicken Force.. but they love the Turkey, ( I have really picky dogs)
Love that they are loving a well balanced human grade food...( we use to cook chicken and veggies and have to add all the other vitamins... obviously this is way easier, and they look healthier, their fur is so much shinier!
My dog loves this food. You can see the chunks of turkey in it. My dog suffers from violent seizures and part of trying to cope with it is improving his diet with real food. I have been preparing his meals for awhile which is both costly and time consuming. Now I am supplementing with this food and so far things are going well. Thanks for the great ingredients and easy preparation Honest Kitchen!
Food was great. Dog went nuts for it. one issus I have with it. it sticks to the bowl, and needs to be scraped off for dog to finish his meal.
I won't buy again because I can't afford it, but my dog will definately miss it.
