We had our two Schnauzers on this food for quite awhile (8-10 months or so). Both of them developed major health issues while on it. One began losing muscle mass and function in their back legs. The other developed seizures. We couldn’t figure out what was causing these symptoms nor could the vet. My wife’s sister also had a schnauzer that began to seize on a regular basis while on this food. The vet put both of these animals on anti-seizure meds which helped control the regularly occurring seizures. We began to wonder what the common thread was. I decided to take them off of the Honest Kitchen food and give them another quality food. My wife’s sister decided to as well. Our dog that was losing funtion in his back legs began to recover after a couple months so we decided to ween our other dog off of the anti-seizure meds. Same result, no more seizures. My wife’s sister’s dog also made a full recovery after this food was removed from their diet.
We have held some of this food back to send off for lab testing as we suspect it contains ingredients that resulted in these horrible medical issues on these three Schnauzers. I hope others read this and can relate any issues they are now having with their dogs back to this food.
This food came highly recommended. I bought a 2 lb box of Revel and we gave it a try. The dogs loved it and their systems tolerated it well. We were using it as a mix-in with their Blue Buffalo kibble and my intent was to transition them over 100 percent. We bought a second 2 lb box to tide us over until our monthly Subscribe and Save box came, which would have 2 10-lb boxes in it. We finished the second 2 lb box and everything was still great. We opened and began to use one of the 10 pound boxes and by the next day, our youngest dog had diarrhea. I didn’t immediately connect the dots because dogs can get diarrhea from lots of sources. We took her off the Revel food and things returned to normal. Two days later, our oldest dog began having diarrhea, too and then vomiting, At that point, I began to become suspicious of the food. The box states that the name has changed but still tastes great. But, did the dog food change? Or do they have a quality control issue? I’ve stopped feeding it and we’ve had to put both dogs on a prescription diet to try and clear up their digestive issues. I’ve switched dog foods a few times over the years and we’ve never experienced a severe issue like this.
My dog had been on your food for about a year. Small Chihuahua, 5lbs. A few months back I bought a new box of the Whole Grain Chicken Dog Food, 10 lbs. I noticed that the smell was very different from the last box I had, and that the texture was quite different too. But my dog was fine and excited to eat it still so I kept her on it. A few weeks into the new batch I did notice her losing fur, thinning on her stomach and legs. I didn't think to much of it because Alopecia in Chihuahua's isn't super uncommon.
Last week she started to act really strange, she is a very food motivated dog and jumps with excitement anytime she is about to be fed, once in the morning and once in the evening. She lost interest in the food completely, we had to pick her up and put her in front of the bowl to get her to eat.
Other symptoms included:
Unusual behavior like:
Restlessness and Anxiety
Glassy unfocused eyes (couldn't get her attention)
Possible focal seizures
Incessant sniffing (like institutionally looking for food, could not get her attention or get her to stop once she started.)
Disoriented
Lethargy (no excitement for attention, car rides, anything she normally would get excited about)
The first thing I did was make sure there was no poison she could have gotten into, which checked out. No poison to be found.
The second thing I did was changer her food, went and bought her the dry stuff she had been on before and fed it to her that evening. This was the weekend so I scheduled a vet appointment for Monday. The next morning there was a bit of improvement, I kept her with me all day. By the evening I fed her the same dry kibble, she had perked up some.
The next morning when I went to feed her she was almost back to normal, aside from still being a little spacey she seemed pretty much back to normal. Improvements continued to where she is back to normal now.
After much research and talking with the vet clinic we came to the conclusion it was hypoglycemia.
Be aware of these symptoms, if your dog starts acting like this I would suggest changing food immediately and a trip to the vet.
I feel like it had to do with this last batch of food, because the last batch she did fine on.
I have three rescue dogs; 35, 65 and 74 pounds respectively. I feed them holistic dry food. When I heard about Honest Kitchen I had to give them a try. I ordered the Revel since my budget is tight. I've had the Revel for about two weeks now. My dogs love it. I believe it has to be the best food I've seen. The first time I prepared it I mixed each batch separately. Mind you, I started with the smaller feeding and followed the directions exactly. I've never seen so much food in my life! There was no way my dogs would be able to eat that much! Good thing it can be refrigerated. I've had to adjust the amount of Revel while keeping a correct water ratio. This is an excellent product and it is expensive but I have been paying around $30.00 for one 15 pound bag of holistic. I could easily spend $300.00 in one month. So from my view the price isn't so bad. Now I feed them half holistic and half Revel. For first time users or someone thinking of trying this -start slow. Mix one of the smaller batches and relate it to how much your dog eats and adjust accordingly. Also I prefer to heat my water on the stove. Warm water or hot tap water doesn't work for me. I added my boiled water to Revel and as I stirred it smelled heavenly! Like a rich chicken gravy or dumplings. No, I didn't eat it! The difference in the water temperature was as day to night. I'll keep using this combination because my holistic is made locally and I know who makes it and what's in it. And Revel is the same way. My dogs are my kids so I want to take care of them. Besides, what is the price of this dog food compared to high vet bills if your dogs get sick from eating junk?
My dog wouldn't eat it - but I don't think that's a fair reason to give a poor review. But I do think people should be aware that the porridge like consistency may be an issue for some. I recommend trying a smaller size first. The good bit though - the ingredients seem to be very good quality. There are big bits of turkey in it and it looks really wholesome. I wish my dog would go for it because I'd love to support such a quality product. But we're back to kibble.
My dog loves Honest Kitchen much better thank Grandma Lucy's. I went back and forth between the two products for about a year .. with my old Whippet that passed. My new boy another Whippet, came to us as a young puppy.. he is now a year old and gets an extremely high quality dry food as well as Honest Kitchen, I fed him the remainder of what I had left in the bag of Grandma Lucy's, he would leave it in his dish unless I mixed a lot of people food with it.. I feel that they (dogs) don't get enough water with the dry diet. With Honest Kitchen, I add some of what we have for dinner and mix it in, add the required amount of water and serve..he loves it. .I will sometimes pop it in the microwave to heat it up as well. He is one spoiled puppy. As far as price, I bought it here for 20 dollars less than at my pet food store.. It arrived the next day.. I was totally amazed.. great product... "it's delicious" signed Tommy the Whippet.
