simplehuman 50 Liter / 13.2 Gallon Rectangular Kitchen Step Trash Can, Brushed Stainless Steel

Read reviews that mention:

Although the product says 13 gallon trash bags. The normal ones don't fit as they are slightly too small. Not interested in buying their custom bags. The Hefty bag brand with the blue tie strap work "Better" than the Glad brand with the black tie strap.

The company is obviously trying to push their custom bags sold through them. Not a customer friendly decision.

This garbage can came used. One picture is included that shows cooked peas smooshed at the bottom of the bag that it came packaged in. The box was undamaged and it was put into a sealed plastic bag. Before we even took it out of the bag we could see brown streaks, scratches and food particles all over it. Needless to say, we are returning it. Hopefully SImplehuman rectifies this problem and it doesn't happen to other customers.
Best trashcan EVER. Stays clean, easy to change bags, super durable, and completely keeps the dogs out of the trash. Worth every penny.
As an aside before I start - that headline describes my love life perfectly.

I bought this trashcan because it looked attractive, had roughly the right dimensions for the available space, and seemed to come with a host of welcome quality-of-life improvements over my old trashcan. Happily, this trashcan met my hopes and expectations on all 3 counts.
Unhappily, there's one MAJOR problem with the trashcan, one that never even entered my mind as a possible consideration when I bought it - IT DOESN'T CLOSE! Since day 1 of ownership there's been an ever-changing gap between the lid and the body. The size of the gap varies based on the trashcan's current mood, and as it's actually behaving itself right now it's only about 1.5 centimeters (which you can see in the photo), but I've seen it get closer to 3 centimeters when it gets particularly upset.
Now, you may think a centimeter or two is nothing to worry about, and you're right in the grand scheme of things, but remember that the smell of putrefaction and flies doesn't need much of a helping hand to move in with you. I also think you'd be less sanguine about this whole affair if you had just spent $100 on a trashcan and every time you take the trash bag out you inevitably wake up the next morning to the scent garbage and the (admittedly somewhat impressive) recolonization efforts of the flies, gnats, and the various other winged brethren which now call your house their home.

I think it goes without saying that I don't think you or anyone should buy this trashcan.

Finally, to be fair, I did get about 3 or 4 open-close cycles out of the lid before the trashcan made its eternal pledge to never close again. Lord knows that's not much, but i thought I should mention that it wasn't terrible from the moment I opened the box.
We just unboxed our new trash can and we're super excited about it. At first we were unsure about paying this much for a "trash can" but I'm glad we did. The thought process that went into designing this trash can really exceeds our expectations.

Pro:
Stylish.
Flat back so it's flushed to the wall (space saver).
Silent close lid.
Lid lock switch to keep the lid open.
'Bucket park' makes it easy to change bags
10 year warranty

Con:
Not exactly 100% FINGERPRINT-PROOF.
You have to push the the lid back with your hand to wedge the 'lock switch' under to stay open (not a big deal)
I waited about a year before I finally ordered; I thought it was too expensive for a garbage can. But I was wrong. This thing is great. It's so much better than my previous round bin: it holds much more; the lift mechanism is smooth and quiet; the bag stays securely in place, and the wide opening makes it easy to dump stuff in.

The Simplehuman bags fit well (and I got a free sample box of 10), but my old Kirkland bags from Costco will also fit fine with a little encouragement.

I can't believe it, but I actually love a garbage can!
Love this can. It’s very large and I finally found something to keep my large dog out! I used regular large kitchen trash bags in it. I did like the sample bags they sent, but think they’re too expensive. I will probably buy a second can for recycling. It keeps the smells in the can.
I've been using this trash can for about 8 months now and I absolutely love it! It is "resistant" to fingerprints and I have two children who put their hands all over everything. My kitchen does not allow me to hide a trash can out of sight and this one looks really nice - much better than the black plastic ones. The top of the bag is hidden and the lid closes tight to keep odors in the trashcan. The opening is wide which allows easy access and less spills. Regular trash bags can be used but I have found that the really cheap brands are little snug, but still work with no tears or slippage. It would buy this trash can again and again and definitely recommend.

It arrived well packaged, no dents or scratches. The mechanism to lift the lid is well made and the lid closes softly (no banging). Clean up is easy - I use Clorox wipes on the outside and around the top rim and have not had any problems or issues in that regard. Unlike every trash can I've ever bought before, I feel that this one is superior by far. I think it will last a long time and still look and work great!
Very easy to clean the outside.

The notches inside to prop the inner bin on, is great when changing bags. I’ve used Aldi bin bags and they work fine. The hole at the back to feed any excess bag through is a plus as the bag is less likely to poke out from under the lid when it’s closed.

My only concern beforehand is that I’ve non slip tiles in the kitchen so I was worried it would be cumbersome moving the bin about but the recessed handle at the back makes it very easy to lift and move away from the cupboards and I can replace it back flat again.

I have this bin about 2 months now and I’m delighted with my purchase. No negatives at all.
I needed a rectangular bin and this did the job. 50l is a good size for a family and looks very presentable in the kitchen in the chrome and black. Soft close is nice as is the fact the bags can’t be seen the a good right seal prevents all smells associated with a plain kitchen bin. I only docked it a star because it is wildly expensive reducing the value for money. That being said I am glad I bought it but surely someone can compete and makes these cheaper. There isn’t a “wow” factor but it’s presentable and appears to be of good quality and durability and fingerprints are not a problem. The bin is easily emptied with zero fuss. I’ve been managing nicely to date by using up my leftover 25l swing bin liners from Aldi. The posh ones from Simplehuman are undoubtedly better but again not necessary unless you are hauling the bag down a flight of stairs or something! I’d recommend buying it but seek discount or alternative that is comparable to improve on value for money. That’s my review of a bin!
This week I was forced into spending a disproportionate amount of time researching kitchen bins and analysing the reviews, looking for one that is dog proof. Our little hell raiser westie pup Florence was knocking over our old bin and vandalising the contents to maximum effect. She taught our other 6 the skill of knocking it over and getting the lid off which rather forced the issue. We already spend a small fortune at our vet and so I finally tracked down this bin. It arrived promptly and is a massive success, even forming the focal point of our kitchen. What a magnificent thing it is. My only problem is now who to leave it to in my will as it will certainly outlive us!
My husband reacted strongly when he knew how much I had spent, considering it overpriced for a kitchen bin. Now that he has seen it and witnessed the effect on 'the pack' he is totally converted - and appreciates the potential vet bills it will save us. No regrets at all. We have now reviewed it on our rehoming charity facebook page and are going to recommend it on our website. I would consider this bin a 'must have' for any dog owner. An excellent purchase.
Love simply human products, had our last bin for 5years (also brushed aluminium finish). Their new products however seem inferior in quality..
We've only had the bin 3days and there are already noticeable drip marks that we can not clean off. This worrys me about the longevity of the brushed aluminium finish.
Hate leaving negative reviews but also can not seem to get through to customer services for help.
This is a brilliant bin, well designed, silent action, and great looking. I had to have a replacement sent as the first arrived damaged ,to expect it to come from the UK to France in it's display box ( and nothing else) was a giant leap of faith and sending it back was a pain, however it was worth it as the bin is fantastic.I will be looking at other Simplehuman products now.One year on.... the lid doesn't shut evenly and one side not completely.I got in touch with Simplehuman,to ask their advice. I was told they do not honour their guarantee for items bought outside of the USA!!! This is why you cannot register the purchase on their website. I responded that this should be made clear on or before purchase and that all I wanted was advice.I was told it could be a problem with the springs! I would expect them to function for more than a year given the price. They told me to take it up with Amazon. So am I expected to pay nearly as much as the bin costs to send it back? The lifetime guarantee is worthless for me and other Uk purchasers , Be warned.
