simplehuman 40 Liter / 10.6 Gallon Slim Kitchen Step Trash Can With Secure Slide Lock, Grey Plastic

Read reviews that mention:

If you've ever used a steel trashcan, which are usually heavy at the base, you'll be used to step-open trashcans staying completely in place when you step on them. This is plastic, so it's much lighter than steel. This means that when the trashcan is relatively empty, it'll move around quite a bit when you step on it. This can be annoying because you then have to position it back into place, and it just feels cheap when your trash can moves around when you step on it, no matter how high-quality the can.

No worries, however. You can buy a gallon of distilled water for less than a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store and place it in the bottom of the trash can to weigh it down. Then, no matter how aggressively you step, it'll stay completely in place, and your Trash Can Experience will have been elevated from Mildly Irritating to Extremely Pleasurable.

Don't worry, there will still be plenty of room once you add your gallon of distilled water; I use standard kitchen trash bags and the bottom of one of these bags rests just above the gallon of distilled water. Obviously, you don't pour the water into the can; just place the unopened gallon on its side in the bottom of the can.

This trash can is High Quality and Highly Affordable. The lack of weight in the base is it's Achilles Heel, but if you employ this Powerful Distilled Water Trick for less than a buck, this baby will sing every time you open its mouth.

As a bonus, if there's ever a natural disaster or some other doomsday scenario, you've taken your first step to prepping your survival stash ;)

Happy Canning!

I have never been more frustrated with a garbage can!!!!!!!!!! The lid will NOT clip into place. I have used my entire body weight, a hammer, and a lot of cuss words but it will not budge. Such a terrible design! DO NOT BUY THIS (unless you're roommates with the hulk and or superman).
I was very reluctant paying $40 for a plastic trash can, but with the impeccable reviews, I knew I was making a good decision. I've had mine for one month now and it's been great. The step to open the lid is as reliable as it was the first day I used it and the lid closes super quietly. It's a perfect trash can for those who live in a small space. The Glad tall kitchen bags (13 gallon) fit this trash can perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.
Good can until it breaks. Ours lasted 4 years. The hinge on the back is made of plastic and wears away over time. When the slot gets too big, the lid falls off whenever you try to open it. I don't see an obvious way to repair it. 3 stars.

Edit: SimpleHuman replaced the lid under warranty. Easy and fast! Upgraded to 4 stars.
The size is nice for narrow places, which is why I purchased this trash can, in spite of the expensive price. The lid is next to impossible to attach. I wrestled with it close to 30 minutes, read the questions and answers from people as equally as frustrated as me, watched the video link provided by the company, all to no avail. Finally, I was able to hammer it on with a mallet, only then to find out that the lock/unlock mechanism is just as difficult. I'm middle aged with average strength and can't get it to work. For the high price and these difficulties, I'd give it a 1/2 star if I could
Can't get cover to attach. Help!
After much frustration and time trying to attach the lid I checked out a you tube video. The manufacturer could /should have added this to the instruction. Once the lid is lined up close the cover and apply a bit of pressure and you will hear/feel it snap in.
Overall: It's a good quality, well made trash can.

Made of durable plastic with a sleek design; this trash can is a great product. I especially appreciate the locking lid design that holds up to a growing toddler! It has good foot pedal mechanism. Give it a light tap and it opens and softly closes giving you enough time to toss something in and keep going. Hold down the foot pedal and it will stay open until you manually shut it. I've read other reviews that said that the lid after a while just pops off the mechanism and the foot pedal stops working, this is not the case for us. We haven't had any problems with the lid detaching, and I have checked out the area when it attaches and the plastic and metal rod seem very solid. I am not worried and I think that might be a flaw that occurred in the manufacturing that has since been resolved. I also love that it streamlined to fit into small spaces and just an overall great size for the kitchen.

My only complaint is that the wheels have no stoppers. This is actually a bit frustrating when little hands try to push the can around the kitchen like it's a toy. Even with the wheels held in place the trash can glides very easily around the floor. Often, during normal opening and closing use, the can "migrates" backwards to the wall. When it gets pushed back it starts to scuff the walls (probably because we have cheap paint). But of all the problems we could have I would say this is fairly minor. My husband has said he will buy some non-slip type material and somehow attach it to the bottom of the can.

Other than tweaking the wheels (or removing them all together) we are very happy with using this trash can. In fact we essetually have two because our recycling can is the same Simple Human can just in blue.

I like how i can put rubbish inside it and it has a lock, you just never know when someone might try to steal it. It can also be used as a portable toilet, which is fantastic. Then you can put this in your car boot and not have to worry about your urine and poo getting splattered everywhere! It is such a great bin that the other day I took this on the commute to work with me. I casually strolled along the central line carriage after all the other passengers had left, picking up other peoples leftover metro newspapers and granola bar wrappers, just so i could use this lovely bin again. It really is that great!!
Fab husky & malamutes proof, as others have stated putting the lid on is a git. watched the video and followed instructions, didn’t work. Put a drop of washing up liquid on each barrel to be slotted in and bam worked a treat :)

The bin bag didn’t fair well but the contents still locked in the bin
