5 star mattress loses 3 stars for health concern.

For all the good of this mattress, the potential health risk caused by the release of gas from build materials is a huge concern.

Many have commented on the “smell” of the Casper when unwrapping. This is caused by the release of gases from materials used to build the mattress. I have measured these gases at dangerous levels that raise serious health and comfort concerns. Be especially careful if the mattress is meant for a child.

I measured Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) well over 1 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m^3). This makes air near the mattress unsafe to breath for prolonged periods.

In fairness, many other mattresses and everyday items have the same problem. None-the-less, you should ask the manufacturer about these gases before buying.

After all, while sleeping, you are breathing this air 6-12 hours per day. That’s 3,000 hours a year breathing dangerous chemicals.

These gases should reduce over time. I will update my review in 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

This mattress is perfect!!! I’ve read hundreds of reviews on mattresses and was a little uneasy when I read some on this particular one about a “horrible smell” that doesn’t go away. I decided to take a chance anyhow and I couldn’t be more happy with my purchase! There is absolutely no “horrible smell” and I’ve let it expand for a few hours now. Don’t believe everything you read people. Some folks just complain to complain! This mattress was worth every penny!

After hearing so many good things about Casper I thought I'd give this mattress a try. Turns out the essential is a very firm mattress. I felt a little mislead, as I had read some people saying the firmness was at a 5. Definitely not true! On a scale of 1-10 I would rate the firmness of this mattress at an 8 or higher. And I'm a side sleeper so this just didn't work out for me. I didn't have any issues when laying on my back or stomach while awake, but I sleep on my side. So I kept waking up throughout the night with my shoulders and hips slightly hurting. I would not recommend this mattress for side sleepers. Everything else about the mattress was great. Expanded quickly and fully, has a nice cover on it, and has a fresh, clean smell. No chemical odor. I would give a higher rating if Casper made it more clear that this is a firm mattress in the description.

There is something deeply deeply wrong with this mattress. Others have mentioned the smell which I also experienced but did not care too much about (my sense of smell is rather poor, comparatively). But what made me write this review to STAY FAR AWAY from this mattress is the day I started using it, I started having serious itchiness all over my body. I Can't think of a single thing else that could have caused it, and it hasn't happened before using this mattress. STAY FAR AWAY!

We bought a Casper two years ago and have loved it. We decided to get another for the guest room because one or the other of us occasionally chases the other to that room (snoring, restless. Wait'll YOU get old.) I think the new mattress is ever so slightly firmer than the old one and my husband prefers it. This could simply be a result of two years of use. I like the old one better. Either is still the best we've ever slept on and way cheaper than those $2000+ ones we used to buy at a mattress store. My only complaint is these mattresses are heavy and they have no handles, but that is the nature of the beast.

I am a back sleeper and I had been experiencing pain on a daily morning basis with my old mattress. I am thrilled with the essential casper. After the first night's sleep I noticed I no longer had neck pain. After the second night's sleep and since then, both neck and back pain had stopped. So far I don't find it to be a heat trapping mattress. I will of course update this review anything changes or unreasonably degrades, but hopefully it won't. I use this mattress with the casper foundation to hopefully ensure longevity.
I will also say do your research. Some people with various sleep preferences (side, back, stomach) and different body weight might/might not like this particular mattress. YMMV.

This is the most comfortable matress I've ever slept on. However I have had it a week and one corner still hasnt settled. I'm hoping it was just packed up to long and it settles soon, but even with that it still sleeps great. I dont wake up with my sore body aches anymore. I work in an automotive factory so I have a very physically demanding job. My body hurts when i get off work. When i wake up in the morning, I feel better than I ever have as far as my aches and pains. I cant believe a mattress can do all that
