The Honest Kitchen Human Grade Dehydrated Organic Whole Grain Dog Food

Read reviews that mention:

We had our two Schnauzers on this food for quite awhile (8-10 months or so). Both of them developed major health issues while on it. One began losing muscle mass and function in their back legs. The other developed seizures. We couldn’t figure out what was causing these symptoms nor could the vet. My wife’s sister also had a schnauzer that began to seize on a regular basis while on this food. The vet put both of these animals on anti-seizure meds which helped control the regularly occurring seizures. We began to wonder what the common thread was. I decided to take them off of the Honest Kitchen food and give them another quality food. My wife’s sister decided to as well. Our dog that was losing funtion in his back legs began to recover after a couple months so we decided to ween our other dog off of the anti-seizure meds. Same result, no more seizures. My wife’s sister’s dog also made a full recovery after this food was removed from their diet.

We have held some of this food back to send off for lab testing as we suspect it contains ingredients that resulted in these horrible medical issues on these three Schnauzers. I hope others read this and can relate any issues they are now having with their dogs back to this food.

I read all the positive reviews and purchased this for my picky eaters. I read some reviews that said "it smells good enough to eat myself!" Uhhhh, I don't think so. This stuff doesn't smell horrible, but certainly doesn't smell GOOD and it looks like vomit. I tried using less water, more water, adding toppers, etc. My dogs took a couple bites and then lost interest.
But this is my biggest gripe. After already purchasing this, I read another review that said this product contains garlic, which is poisonous to dogs. Their dog got very sick as a result. This concerned me so I checked the ingredients on the box. Sure enough, garlic was on the list (this is for Turkey flavor, not chicken. I did buy/try both). I questioned how much harm it could really do, since I couldn't imagine there's that much garlic in it. But I figured I'd ask my vet since they just happened to have an appt with him the day after food arrived. When I told my vet about the garlic ingredient and showed him the box....he shook his head and said he wouldn't give this to them. Garlic IS considered poisonous to dogs and not worth the risk. Granted it might take a large consumption of it to cause harm, it's just not worth taking the risk. My dogs are my babies and I could never feed them something knowing it could make them sick. So not only did they not love this stuff, they also can't have it.
if they did. Waste of money! Although, it appears that the company is willing to refund my money when I requested to return. So I do appreciate that!
After much research into different types of dog food, I felt discouraged and began to feel I would have to home prepare the food. Then I discovered the Honest Kitchen brand. I priced all the items I would need to make the food myself and found Honest Kitchen's food was cheaper. Now they really had my attention. I began with a few samples from their direct website. My dogs ate it like it was a treat; a reaction I'd only previously received when feeding them salmon or peanut butter. So I shopped around for the best price and landed here on Amazon with the subscribe and save delivery.

I have tried two varieties so far, Keen turkey and Verve beef. One of my three dogs became disenchanted with the beef one and stopped eating it, despite my numerous attempts at coaxing her. However, they all love, love, love this turkey one. Winner, winner, turkey dinner. Personally, I also like to add a little salmon oil for their heart and skin health (I use the Grizzly brand). This is more affordable for me than purchasing the seafood Honest Kitchen variety.

Now here's how I like to make it. My 40lb dog gets a 1/2 cup (8oz) of food and my two 10lb dogs get 1/8 cup (2Tbsp/2oz). I then squirt in the appropriate amount of salmon oil. For the water, I like it hot, just below boiling. This makes the food form better and also smell better to the dogs, thus becoming more appetizing. The amount of water I put in is 50% more than the dry food, so 3/4 cup (12oz) for the larger dog and 3/8 cup (3Tbsp/3oz) for the little ones. Then I let it sit about 5 minutes to give it time to thicken and also cool down a bit. I test the temperature of the food before feeding it to them always.

Meanwhile, while I am doing this, three very eager dogs are driving me crazy. The sheepdog is crying the whole time as if waiting for the food is the worst punishment ever. The chihuahua is jumping up and scratching the back of my legs. The mini dachshund is barking demandingly and sometimes hops in circles. The entire circus act with the three of them is quite ridiculous. When they finally get their food, they go at it like crazy and lick their bowls clean. I guess that's a five star rating from them. It's a five star rating from me too!
This food came highly recommended. I bought a 2 lb box of Revel and we gave it a try. The dogs loved it and their systems tolerated it well. We were using it as a mix-in with their Blue Buffalo kibble and my intent was to transition them over 100 percent. We bought a second 2 lb box to tide us over until our monthly Subscribe and Save box came, which would have 2 10-lb boxes in it. We finished the second 2 lb box and everything was still great. We opened and began to use one of the 10 pound boxes and by the next day, our youngest dog had diarrhea. I didn’t immediately connect the dots because dogs can get diarrhea from lots of sources. We took her off the Revel food and things returned to normal. Two days later, our oldest dog began having diarrhea, too and then vomiting, At that point, I began to become suspicious of the food. The box states that the name has changed but still tastes great. But, did the dog food change? Or do they have a quality control issue? I’ve stopped feeding it and we’ve had to put both dogs on a prescription diet to try and clear up their digestive issues. I’ve switched dog foods a few times over the years and we’ve never experienced a severe issue like this.
