Beware of the Positive Reviews:
Ten people posted reviews to these straps within a small period of time. Admittedly, many of them provided disclosure that they received this item at a deep discount to review it, but a little research shows that these reviewers give practically everything they review 5 stars, which makes me highly suspicious of the method of giving discounts to people to give an "unbiased" review. These are, indirectly, paid reviews in my opinion, but at least it is disclosed.
These straps are safety equipment, designed to protect your little ones from harm, injury, and potentially death. As such, the instructions should be VERY clear. In this case they are not. It is important, because if the strap is not threaded properly through the buckle, then it just easily slips through. The design is peculiar. The way the straps come you either have to remove the strap and flip it 180 degrees to put into the buckle, which would put your strap under (so that you would have to pull downward to tighten), or you screw in the stud plate with the screw hole above and the opening of the hook pointing up. Since the force vector would be up if furniture is tipping, I would worry that the buckle would unsnap. It is ABS, and seems solid, but I'm not 100% sure (and I should be). Further, the hardware is incredibly cheap. Any resistance from the material you are screwing into will practically guarantee that the Phillips cross will strip, making it nearly impossible to remove the screw, and leaving you with frustration and fear that the screws will fail if weighted. A product like this should at least provide quality screws.
Otherwise, this product is a good value. You should use two straps per piece of furniture for peace of mind. The ABS is solid, and seems much better than plastic designs that I have seen and used. These straps are perfect for lower furniture such as dressers, desks, and bureaus. I would not use them for tall items like bookcases, since they would be awkward to tighten. For those its cheaper and more secure to use L-brackets that are screwed into a stud and the top of your bookcase.
Overall, this can be a 5 star product, but they lost a star due to the cheap screws, and another star for the horrible instructions.
*UPDATE* October 28th 2015. So I've made a couple of edits to my original review, changing some of my original harsh language. The reason is that Julie has addressed or attempted to address the issues on this product. She is genuinely trying to address customer issues, and I believe she has a potentially excellent product to market. I also understand the impetus to give the product to customers at a discounted price to get it out there and reviewed in the face of competition, but I don't wholly agree with the practice for safety equipment.
Julie personally contacted me by email, sending a detailed .pdf of the instructions. They are much clearer, but still suffer from one minor detail: If the instructions are followed the "pull" strap is below the buckle. I worry that this may be a mistake in the way my straps were snapped together, but I will address this off-line with Julie. The point is that it is clear that she cares about their product and the safety of our little ones. She has also indicated that she will look into the issue of the inferior screws that are supplied with the kit, so it really looks like she is taking this issue seriously.
Used for dressers so they don't hurt my toddler. Perfect strong hold!
Good for stabilizing my TV to the wall. I did t have to rearrange straps. Buckle was giving up slack when pulled.
I shopped for awhile to find the right furniture straps for our new bedroom set. I settled on this set because it seemed to be the greatest value for the same types of straps I was seeing for more. The little cow door stopper was a nice bonus. Totally honest here, I had a learning curve when installing these. BUT the instructions were very helpful. Tall dresser? Anchor on the wall 8in down and attach the other end to the top. Long lower dresser..from the side and 8in down. I followed the directions and didn't have any trouble about placement. My hangup was finding our wall studs where we wanted our furniture. I worked out well for the tall dresser but I couldn't use studs with our long dresser. The solution for us was the white plastic wall anchors you screw into the wall first and then screw the strap into that. I placed three anchors, one for each screw, in the wall before attaching the straps for those parts.
The included hardware was perfect, and all I needed with the areas where I had a wall stud. The wall anchors you push into the drywall I had in the garage, but they are a few dollar at any hardware store. Overall, super happy with this purchase. I highly recommend. And we even have who straps left to redo out Tv! I like these better, so will be removing the anchor we currently have a using two of these straps on our tv also. Included pictures of both the side straps and from the top of tall furniture.
These are well made and unlike some other brands provide 3 screws per end, leaving no room for doubt that they are secure.
However, to me the design is a bit backwards. The 2 inch long anchor screw ought to go to the wall, not the furniture- yet the recess in the mounting point is clearly on the furniture side. I was able to sink the anchor in my furniture, and the one inch screws went through the drywall and into the stud, but I can't help but think it would be better with the bigger screw in the stud. That said, I tested it as is and am satisfied as it provides the extra security against the bookshelf tipping over.
Nothing is a substitute for adult supervision, but added peace of mind makes this well worth it!
Easy to assemble
As others have mentioned, the screws they come with this product are absolutely useless. I was able to secure one strap with 6 extremely stripped screws. Not sure how I’m going to get the screws out someday, but that will have to be a problem for then.
First screw into the second strap is completely stripped and only halfway in, so now I’m stuck and unsure what to do.
Overall the straps seem strong and secure. Just please send better quality screws with it.
Excellent. Used in new school to secure book pack cubbies to walls. Plenty of screws and anchors along with machine screws for those with TV / appliance applications
I used this to secure a big bookcase (1.8m tall by 80x40cm) for anti tipping.
I've obviously not done a real world test... but I expect the fixing will do its job.
I think the price is exaggerated. You can just buy the webbing strap (of your desired colour, material and width) and simply screw it (properly) to the wall and furniture. This would cost you a fraction of this package. The plastics are fine and it comes with lots of screws and such but the cost isn't proportional to the value in my opinion (I got a "warehouse deal" that made it actually fair value).
However this does have the added benefit of the plastic parts that allow you to extend the straps to reach behind, and even to remove the straps without unscrewing anything.
There are a few downsides but nothing major:
- The three holes to use on the wall are really way too close to one another. You'd need skinnier fixings to use all three, otherwise - and most certainly if you are only affixing to the plasterboard - you can actually hamper the efficacy by leaving such small amount of space between each hole.
- The plastics are fine but they really feel like the weakest link in the chain (I affixed to masonry with 5mm screws so ultra strong)
- For furniture, tightening the straps is not as easy as with, say, a backpack. It needs a bit more work so not something to do relatively regularly.
- For furniture, I had to mount the plastic reversed on the furniture side because this assumes you can fix to the back, yet most furniture only have a thin MDF back so you want to fix to the top (what I did)
- For furniture, the provided screws are way too long. I don't think anyone will be able to use these. I had some spare shorter wood screws that did the job.
- The rawlplugs are crap as with every other item in the market that comes with fixings - just ditch them and use good quality strong plugs.
I cannot say if or how good this is for TVs.
Overall, it does the job. I am happy with this but because I paid much less and because I happened to have some spare screws for my furniture.
Other reviewers are right that the included fixings and instructions are very poor!
But - I think these are far better than other alternatives because of the long strap - I believe you want the fixing on the furniture to be as high as possible and the one on the wall as low as possible, and the distance between the two to be as great as possible - means the pull on the fixings is sideways rather than straight outwards. Because the strap is adjustable I think I'll be able to loosen it to move furniture out if needed - wouldn't be possible with other types that come with cable ties or wire loops. You just have to get the orientation of the plastic bits and threading of the webbing right so it holds tight when under tension.
I used Corefix fittings to attach to dot-and-dab walls and duopower plugs to attach to masonry (a bit better than rawlplugs)
Report
The only good thing about this product are the belts. Most of the bolts were missing and I had to go to the hardware store to buy the right ones. Some screws were missing too. I think there are better products out there.
Mixed feelings about these but after fitting them to a chest of drawers in our toddlers room I found I just didn't trust them. I quickly removed them and went with a good old batten and L-brackets instead which is far easier, more robust and ultimately a lot safer. I would think for a TV they are probably pretty good but for furniture I don't recommend them. Read on and see my video for why.
Good:
* Very high quality - the plastic is extremely strong and not brittle and the entire assembly feels well made
* Excellent instructions - good instructions enclosed and updated version sent by email too
* Good company - designed and produced by a small company who seem to care about their product
Bad:
* Tricky to install - they're a faff because you need to work in a narrow space between the furniture and the wall
* Need checking / re-tightening periodically - I just want something I can forget about and know that it is safe
* They allow a good deal of tipping before they lock and hold - this just didn't give me confidence
* If you repeatedly tip the furniture then they work their way looser and looser - again, didn't inspire confidence
See my video for illustration of the final 2 points above.
Other nitpicks: the instructions mention a 5mm drill for some reason but the enclosed plugs need a 7mm drill, the screws are philips (cross) head which are not really suitable for high torque applications like this so you may strip the heads (pozi drive or torx would be better choices), no VESA screws included for fitting to a TV.
Overall, for furniture, they are less convenient, more expensive, less strong and less safe than just using a batten and L-brackets so I don't really see the point in them. If you really want straps then these do seem superior quality to similar products from other manufacturers.
