I'm reviewing the Queen-sized Zinus 18" Premium SmartBase. This took me less than 15 min. to set up, and only cuz i was taking pictures in between. It comes in two parts, folded in half. You basically unfold each almost twin-sized piece (similar to a flat conference tables with folded down legs), click in the safety hooks and tighten the wingnuts on each of the four corners. You then use the included two long screws and wingnut the two parts together to make the complete base-- no tools necessary.
This makes for a very tall bed, esp. if you have thick mattresses and a topper like we do. But, the glory of having an ample area to discreetly store supplies makes this SO WORTH IT. I was able to fit EIGHT 20-gallon storage containers that were 17 inches tall and almost 17 inches wide: [23 3/4"x 17" x 16 5/8" (60.3cm x 43cm x 42.2cm)] under this frame, and 18" bedskirts are available--i need to get one.
This frame feels very sturdy set-up, for being so lightweight, and has no squeaking- all the parts that touch the floor have plastic caps, so your wood floors should be fine. It feels great to be on the bed, and there is no movement. Best yet, I was able to throw out our old and unwieldy box spring, which was so hard to fit up our stairs during our last move. Yay, Zinus!
Okay - so I have been super busy reorganizing my room for like 2 days because I found this awesome bed frame!. Super easy to put together with just one person (even with a king size) and you can fit TWELVE FREAKIN 20 GALLON TUBS UNDER THERE!! That is crazy amounts of storage!!
Oh and i was trying to figure out where I was going to find an extra long bed skirt, when I realized that I could just use some folded over twin size sheets. ;) They are pinned down to frame.
I purchased this bed frame on June 10th. Shipping was fast and set up was so easy! The height is wonderful. But, I have spent the last month trying to contact customer service to report that the bed literally COLLAPSED WHILE MY 12 YEAR OLD WAS SLEEPING! The welds broke on the for of the bed! When I call customer service, it rings and puts me in hold. They I get the option to leave a message. I have multiple times and nothing! No way should I purchase a bedframe that lasts barely 90 days! I would not recommend!
I bought this in July 2016 and the frame doesn't squeak during relations, it squeaks getting in and out of bed... We are going out to buy plastic washers to see if that helps. UPDATE: the corner arms which are held in place by wingnuts just need to be tightened. Easy fix. Total weight sleeping on this frame is ~600lbs. We aren't distrubed by the 32" bed height being 5'10" and 6'4".
I am able to easily move the frame, with the only difficult part being adding the mattress ON the frame. Our 14" memory foam mattress is 100lbs and easily pushes around the light frame (14" Novafoam Costco). I haven't noticed any mattress or frame deformities. Having a heavy mattress really evens out weight distribution on the frame.
We fit 6, 18gal roughneck rubbermaid totes (H 16.5") and stacked 2, 10gal roughneck rubbermaid on top of each other under the frame. They easily slide under but it is close call! I was also able to fit my bike trainer and other misc. items under the frame.
We went out to purchase nice 14" drop bed skirt to hide the totes from plain sight (at BedBath&Beyond). I placed shelf liners on the bed skirt upside to make sure the mattress doesn't slide off the frame. No complaints there.
I agonized over this purchase a long time, and almost bought a 16" high from another brand because all my bins average 13.5" high, but the one feature important to me was a frame that remains quiet during movement, and as a 180lb 70" tossing and turning side sleeper, I didn't want to take a chance with a non Zinus since quiet is their claim to fame (if you know a metal working mechanic with a high RPM circular saw, you can always get the legs shortened). I ordered on a Sunday but they didn't ship till Thursday and it arrived the following Wednesday after crossing the country by FedEx which arrived intact with no frame damage. Assembly was simple, though I was disappointed Zinus does not include 4¢ worth of nylon or silicon bushings for the two long bolt and wingnut frame joiners, so I used my own.
I placed my expensive 30yo 8" feather+foam+spring mattress on top, made the bed and did a test lay down only to discover how much I felt the frame down the center even while on my back. if you are a back sleeper on a twin(1) queen(2) you may not notice since there is no center bar along your spin, but for back sleepers on a full - it's awful, especially if you are a side sleeper like me. remember this is an 18" frame, so it's no like many will be using 12" thick mattresses here. fortunately I had a 4'x6' hard rubber mat to spare from my home gym flooring, so I unrolled it on the frame, placed the mattress on top, made the bed, and poof like magic this frame was usable as something you could actually fall asleep on.
zinus only sells thin no slip mats, not semi rigid bucky boards, so buyers may not be aware of how badly they need one until they have this set up at home. I would have been upset had I now had to pay extra to secure a board, so I deduct a star for Zinus marketing these frames without any kind of guidance or options on how much they may be needed particularly on the full with that bar along your back.
photos are of Sterilite 1888 or 1988 bins and a typical folding chair for height scale. BTW the 2 channels for bins seem to have 31"x16.5" clearance (diagonal braces lean outward so they don't interfere) thus I was able to fully occupy the space using 37gal rubbermaid roughneck totes without their lids, while HDX 27gal totes fit the width with their lids but leave a 2" gap above - be advised when using these larger totes you want the Queen size frame to accommodate 2x3 as the Full will leave the bins sticking out on one side by a few inches.
As soon as I saw that an 18" high bed frame was available, allowing storage of full sized plastic totes beneath, I decided I needed this. I live in a 700 sq' foot space without a storage locker and need every square inch to be well utilized.
- It came in 2 pieces- perhaps you could use them for 2 separate single beds? I could measure if anyone is wondering.
Pros:
- It came packed in a box that was manageable for me, as a woman, to carry up to my condo.
- Instructions were very clear
- The frame was very easy to assemble.
- Frame is sturdy and my mattress is not sliding around on top of it
- There is a full 17" clearance below the frame which allows the majority of plastic totes to fit comfortably- even larger ones.
- I have a regular ol' foam mattress and when I sit on my assembled bed now, my feet dangle (I'm 5'9" so this is a novelty for me).
- I have space to store 8 large Rubbermaid style totes beneath it!
Cons:
- It was out of stock for a long time which is a bit annoying. I tried to talk to the folks on the Zinus US website which has online customer service chat but the chat box sat idle on the days I tried it and nobody answered.
-Though it has a 5 year warranty, if there is an issue that requires repair or review by the manufacturer, the customer has to pay shipping charges (per the warranty doc, pic attached). I can only imagine how expensive it would be to ship a large box containing a bed frame via Canada Post.
- Ordered on a Weds, arrived following Tues, despite being Prime (it came from the US). Amazon warned me about this at the time of purchase but I always find it annoying when Prime items take longer than 2 days (especially since I live in a major urban center where mail comes first before being shipped out around the country.)
What an amazing product! We were looking to create as much storage as possible in our guest room. This product fit that bill perfectly while allowing us to use my grandparents old headboard and footboard. In order to attach the headboard and footboard we purchased 2 sets of the Zinus headboard brackets sold separately. After the base was assembled we lined up the headboard and footboard marked a few spots and drilled them attaching them with screws and washers. The set up took no time at all, straight forward and easy to do. Our guest was comfortable and after asking her a ton of questions she had no complaints, in fact she might be purchasing one for her new home! No squeaking or slipping of the mattress as other reviewers mentioned. Holds a ton of storage and we are now considering the SmartBase for our other beds as storage is an issue in our home. Perfect for narrow hallways or stairs and not having to fight with a box spring is always a plus.
EDIT 2: Feb 2019
I've had this frame for well over a year at this point, and it's still fantastic. I've moved, and disassembly/reassembly literally takes seconds. Still as sturdy (and COMPLETELY SILENT) as the day I bought it. However! The price has nearly doubled! I purchased this frame at something like $110 taxes in. Now I see it being sold for $200?!?! Do I recommend it? YES! Would I have paid $200? Not a chance. I would be looking at Zinus' own website, or find some other supplier if the price is this high on Amazon. This frame is awesome, and 100% worth having, but wow, the price doubling is not cool in my opinion.
EDIT: 3 Months After Purchase
Still no issues. Its still solid, it's still silent. Really glad I bought this frame. I may make a headboard or something when I have more room, but for now it meets all my needs and I love it.
I just put this frame together, and I have to say, the reviews seem accurate so far! It takes 10-15 minutes to assemble by yourself, maybe less if you have a friend to help. Although the legs already have rubber caps, I placed them on rubber glides for extra support on my hardwood floor, and so far it feels sturdy and makes absolutely no noise at all. My only small complaint is that there was no hex key included in the package to help you tighten the bolts holding the two halves of the frame together, but since I have plenty of tools, it was really a non issue for me. There's plenty of space beneath for storage, and so far I'm very happy with my purchase. Obviously, if I have any troubles, I'll come back and update this review, but for now, in terms of meeting the product's claims, value for money, and ease of assembly, I feel this frame deserves the full 5 stars!
This is a great frame.. it's solid, doesn't squeak, and is very quick to pack up and move.
I was concerned about the reviewer that said that the mattress slid, or another that didn't recommend for foam mattresses. I don't find it slides too easily (I can slide it, but I haven't done it accidentally yet), if it does for you I'm sure small non slip sheet or two would make it acceptable. As for not being good for foam.. I thought maybe it would leave grooves from the supports, but when I pulled up the mattress after two weeks, there was no visible grooves.
My only warning is to be careful when moving it. There is only two bolts connecting the two frames together, which is enough. But I had a flooring installer fold the frame over in the wrong direction when I wasn't looking, and those two bolts bent like butter. Managed to bend them back, and could probably find some steel replacements at the hardware store, but they're still working fine.
Goodbye old box spring and frame - Hello Zinus! The truly modern way to support your mattress.
I am so please with my purchases from Zinus! This bed frame is so much better in all ways than my old box spring and frame. This Zinus frame is so lightweight and easy to assemble, one person can do it in minutes.
Based upon a slat based support system, it doesn't sag and won't break down like a traditional box spring.
Best of all is the amount of room it frees up in your bedroom! With the extra vertical clearance, you can easily store up to 16 inches of stacked storage containers out of site, and out of the way, under your bed.
Also, cleaning under your bed is a now a breeze. No more dragging out the bed to vacuum or sweep under it, or straining or laying down to make sure you didn't miss a spot. With this frame, you can easily vacuum or dust mop under your bed, and know it's clean at a glance.
I wonder how I managed to live with my old box spring as long as I did now that I have this bed frame.
Never again with space eating, heavy box springs. Hello Zinus! The modern way to furnish your bed.
Very pleased, and so highly recommended.
* I also purchased the Zinus 18 Inch Headboard and Footboard Brackets (2 Sets)
and the Zinus 12 Inch Gel-Infused Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress, Queen
Zinus 18 Inch Premium SmartBase Mattress Foundation / 4 Extra Inches high for Under-bed Storage / Platform Bed Frame / Box Spring Replacement / Strong / Sturdy / Quiet Noise-Free, Queen
No sound or movement whatsoever when I sleep on it, easy to set up on my own. 18" height fits standard rubbermaid tubs just barely but it is VERY HIGH. If you have a smaller room, the tall one may not be the best option but if you want space for storage underneath it is a good choice. I use it with an Endy mattress and the mattress stays put without a rubber mat underneath.
This is my second one and they are excellent. Easy to assemble and lots of storage!
Dislike: they used canada post instead of UPS and now I have to figure out how to go pick it up. If I wanted to go out and buy something I would have done so but the whole point of amazon for me is that it comes to my door because I dont have the luxury of a car. Now I have no idea how I'm gonna get this big box. Taxis charge extra 10 bucks for a van. Its needless spending when it should arrive to my door like everything from amazon
Purchased this bed about a 7 months ago, and two of the leg welds have since failed. I hadn't noticed, until I moved something under the bed and saw that the leg was able to shift sideways now. I am concerned that the bed will collapse, with the way the welds failed.
Attempting to contact Zinus for warranty support, no reply after 2 business days (and 2 non-business days).
I’m extremely pleased with this purchase thus far. I received it on Friday but it wasn’t due to arrive until Monday...it’s now Sunday evening and I have had two nights sleep on it with my 90lb puppy! We are both very much in love with this frame and the height that it gives us. We feel like royalty! Hahahah! It’s also very supportive of my memory foam mattress without any pain or discomfort from the metal slats. There’s no mattress pushing through the slats or metal in any way and actually feels very solid underneath without the need for a boxspring. The only downfall is the limited space in my suite for my California King so I can’t access the sides of the bed to slide larger items in and out underneath my bed. This frame offers a massive amount of storage space with great clearance if you have the space to access the sides of the frame in your room.
I found myself with the opportunity to get a king sized mattress for free, and also the problem of running out of room to store stuff in my bedroom. This innovative replacement for a boxspring helped me on both of these fronts. It's tall that the space underneath was enough for me to fit several large storage containers, a laundry basket, a tool box, my bike (during the winter), my out-of-season clothes (in vacuum sealed bags), and more. It's just a phenomenal improvement to my room.
It doesn't squeak on it's own. I attached a headboard and footboard using the adapters they sell separately, and then the spots where the adapters attach started squeaking a bit, but that was easily fixed with the application of some lubricant. Set up was simple, and the package came with the few tools I needed.
I've been recommending my friends and family get bedframes like this one, and I would recommend it for you too.
As advertised. very sturdy, comes mostly assembled (only have to add 2 bolts!) Fits very large storage bins underneath. If you have a thick mattress, consider how tall the bed will be before you get this.. I have a 12inch Zinus cloud mattress and it's quite high. If you're buying a mattress at the same time, I suggest a 6-8 inch unless you are very tall.
There are no sides to the frame, so your mattress can slip a bit. I like this as my room is small and making the bed is easier.
Makes no noise, very sturdy, plenty of space under my bed to stash my luggage and some boxes of clothes and whatnot. I l live in a 12x12 ft room (eyeballing it) and well this made my life a lot easier by providing that extra space I needed. I have over a year of use on it and I have no complaints. There's no squeaky noise or anything and it feels very sturdy and I'm not a light guy. Would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy setup without dishing out hundreds of dollars for a box spring or frame.
Oh wow this bed frame is good. This is PERFECT for anybody like me who wants a bed frame that’s easy to set up AND even easier to take down when you eventually need to move. Literally 2 bolts to put the pieces together. Took me a whole 5-10 minutes to set up.
This is so much better than the ikea bed frames that take forever to set up and even longer to disassemble when moving.
The only thing I wish is that there was a bed skirt that was black. The bed skirt available is only in white, but I need a black one. Still, plenty of space under the frame to add storage.
Also, like other reviews I saw on here, I can confirm as well that the bed frame makes ZERO noise at all. It’s incredibly sturdy.
Over all I’d highly recommend this. So worth the $140.00
Quick delivery, easy to set up and LOVE the extra room under the bed for storage! This is particularly important in a modest sized bedroom. I purchased the queen size to go with the Zinus 12" mattress and it all came together fantastically. I read the reviews prior to purchase and I was careful when assembling and moving the frame and had no issues as I had items on hand that helped me slide it along the carpet and I did not place bolts until it was in it's final resting place. I purchased the headboard brackets and attached the headboard without any issues. Really simple set up and happy with my decision to purchase the Zinus 18"SmartBase Mattress Frame. My bed skirt almost hides the legs, they peek out a bit but for the storage space I gain, it's a great trade-off.
I bought this for my son and within 5 minutes it was up. No tools. I loved it so much I bought one for my daughter too.
Very sturdy. Tons of room underneath. You can stack 2 under bed storage roll containers on each side (4 altogether). The support bar in the middle prevents from adding another 2 roll containers so you need to get smaller containers for in between. I also bought the AmazonBasics Pleated Bed Skirt - 16". The bed skirt was a perfect fit. I didn't need to get an 18". It wouldn't have looked good. The 16" is perfect for this bed.
