I have a chronic illness and I have been in pain for many years. I first thought of getting this pillow 5 years ago. I hesitated due to the cost. My hope was that this pillow would help me get more then a few hours of sleep and wake up in less pain. I may possibly get one more hour of sleep and my pain level is about 50-75 % less in the morning. I am well pleased with this product.
Some people complained of a chemical smell. I am sensitive to odors. This pillow came with a slight odor but it dissipated within a few hours and I never experience a headache, trouble breathing, or sinus pain due to it.
Some people complained the pillow is too hard. This is subjective but for me the pillow is the perfect firmness to not compromise the angles it is trying to achieve while not creating any pressure points on me.
Some people complained about the pillow being too long or short. Again, this is subjective. I like my feet to hang over the edge due to pain in my heels. At 5'4" I find the length almost perfect. I do not have the two sections zipped together so I move the sections as close together as I can. Tall people can easily move them farther apart and add a pillow behind their knees.
One suggestion I have is I put a fitted twin sheet over the whole thing to make washing easy (and match my color scheme) since I am not in any condition to wrestle with the zippered coverings (although I do appreciate that they are there).
Final thoughts, I love this pillow and feel it has increased my quality of life.
If you use a wedge pillow for whatever reason, I HIGHLY recommend getting this product. Wedge pillows have a fatal flaw, you slip and slide down the pillow once you are asleep...causing you to lose the benefit of elevation, wake up, and feel basically bad. This product is a perfect fit for me. I can now get rid of all the pillows I used to prop up my head and knees and replace them with something much better. I do NOT slide down at all and the angles are better too. The foam is really comfortable...I just can't recommend it enough for anyone struggling with a wedge pillow or piling up pillows to get a good nights sleep. I have zero affiliation with this company...just love a quality design when I see it.
I love this! My physical therapist recommended a zero-gravity chair for relief of symptoms and complications from my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that cause my joints to be unstable and resulting in frequent dislocations. I have a lawn chair that is comfortable for a while, but is not good for a night's sleep. We shopped for a zero-gravity recliner, but I did not wan too invest more than $1,000 for a decent one. A regular recliner does not support my spinal alignment and I will feel worse. I was not sure about paying $125 or more for a wedge pillow system, so I tried the inflatable version for less than $50. I loved it, but it began to inflate after a few months. I decided to upgrade to the foam Backmax. I was unsure if I needed the Backmax Plus, I am 5'9" and it seemed the regular would be large enough, less bulky, lighter weight, take-up a lot less space, and was almost $100 cheaper.
I tried it on the bed, but I had it on one side and had to get on the bed from my husband's side - so I could not get in bed after him or get up for the restroom without disturbing him. Because of my joint instability, I need to get on all fours then roll over on the pillow to keep my joints neutral. It was also heavy and bulky to frequently move on and off the bed.I have placed my Backmax on the floor of our living room. I can watch TV or read, even when I am to fatigued or in too much pay to hold up my own posture! I used to hurt so much if I would lie on the sofa. If lying in bed causes me too much pain or I have insomnia, I now have a supportive alternative. I need a separate small pillow to support my neck, one the size of a small throw pillow or a travel pillow works well for me.
Pros:
Zero-gravity feel
Helps me relax when I have muscle spasms
Help support my alignment during and after my frequent joint dislocations and subluxations from joint hypermobility due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
The only way I can take pressure off dislocated ribs until I can get them to realign
Able to position myself to relieve the pressure of constipation or pelvic organ prolapse
Assistance with maintaining a neutral position
Excellent for a neutral position for sleeping when I go through periods that I would dislocate my shoulder or hip while lying on a regular bed
A place to relax when I have insomnia
Supports my posture while I read or watch television
Relief from heartburn and reflux
Cons:
I would give it 5 stars, but I am 5'9" and could use an extra inch of width and must separate the two large cushions to accommodate my length.
Also, the lower pillow will not stay flush with the top, it sinks over time.
Heavy and bulky, consider this if you think you will need to move have a loss of strength or mobility issues.
Bulky if you are sharing a Queen-sized bed and I would not bother putting on a full bed if you have a sleep partner.
Need to put in the middle of a full or twin bed. People with mobility issues may have difficulty getting onto the system and getting back up.
I am 5'9" and really should use the Plus for the length, even the width in the shoulders and I wear a misses medium or large top, but it is $100 more and much bigger. A medium or large size in between the two would be perfect.
Although the regular Backmax is not quite long enough for me, It was one of the only ways I have ever been able to completely relax. I did not the the few cons warranted exchanging it for the additional bulk, weight, and cost of the Backmax Plus. I may eventually splurge on the Backmax Plus.
If I have additional mobility issues in the future, I may not be able to get down to and up from the Backmax. At that point, I will be saving up for a zero-gravity recliner.
This bed! 0h. My. Gosh! I was feeling pretty desperate, unable to sleep upright, unable to sleep laying down. This bed gave me the first good nights sleep in over two months. The cushions are the perfect hardness, enough to give support, but enough give to be comfortable. They said three-piece, but it actually came with a fourth, a little pillow that’s seen in the picture. When I am needing to sit up, I unzip the top cushion and flip it over and it gives a nice recline that’s upright enough to watch TV or work on a computer. Full disclosure, it did smell a little “new car”, so I did wash the cushion covers, but did not need to dry them, just hung them for a few hours. They are so soft! So easy to take off and put back on again! The covers are really well-made, big sturdy zippers. Based on the quality, I expect to have this for years. A big investment for me, but worth every penny. I went with the smaller (20 inches) because I didn’t want to crowd my husband in our queen size bed. This is the perfect size. At the risk of hyperbole, this product has changed my life!
I have neck and back issues when I’m not home in my adjustable bed. This goes with us in the car when traveling. I have one at each of my kids’ homes for when we travel there. This is the third one I have ordered so I have one for road trips. No complaints. Very durable. My only comment is that I wish this company would re-introduce the inflatable version. I traveled with one in my suitcase for years and it got inflated every night for a good night’s sleep. After several years and many trips it got leaks that could no longer be repaired.
