I've gone through at least 20 different cat scratchers doing everything I can to avoid damage to my couch from my 7 fur babies, 2 of which are ginormous twin Maine Coon boys with paws the size of paddles. I searched for couch protectors, and didn't see anything that would meet the challenge of the little slicing and dicing knives on my feisty felines that had shredded my couch corner from the bottom to the top, down to the wood base. Then I ran across the Sofa Scratcher. I was super worried that it would not fit my couch, but purchased it anyway. Then spent the next few months kicking myself for not finding and purchasing it sooner. This is the kind of purchase I want to scream from the mountaintops, "THIS IS WORTH IT!" You can't see the plexiglass at the base and it slides underneath the foot of the couch. It holds there so sturdily that the first Sofa Scratcher I purchased was pulled off its base by unrelenting pulling paws and just wobbled back and forth. When I purchased a 2nd one for the other side of the couch, I explained the issue to the seller, and instead of explaining how I might be able to fix it, they just sent me another one free of charge. What outstanding customer service and pegged me a customer for life. Normally when the cats scratch on a scratching post, you'll get fabric or carpet type remnants all over or pieces of sisal rope shredded and looks nasty or comes unraveled off the tree, and within a year or so, it's so ugly you toss it. This Sofa Scratcher does not have any pull or claw marks at all. It looks as good now as it did coming out of the box 2 years ago. It's been battered by 3 kittens, the Twins, my other full grown felines, and a puppy. Absolutely nothing else on the market can rival the durability or the money value, and I've been a multi-cat household for all of my adult life.
I've purchased about six of these over the years. I currently have three active in my house. They truly work really well and typically last a year or two before I have to replace them. The cats use them exclusively to scratch on and leave the rest of my furniture alone. This has truly saved my couch from being shredded.
I will say that, sometimes, the screws do come loose and the lucite base and the upright separate. But, I've usually been able to fix it with some glue. This tends to happen because of the humans in the house moving the sofa and not being careful. Not the cats.
I will continue to buy these and replace my posts as the cats happily shred them to bits.
Cat loves them and won’t scratch the furniture while these are available to him.
They don’t fit PERFECTLY on our couch but still enough to not make the couch look bad. Our cats love them
Easy to set up, covered the corner of the couch, shipped the very next day.
This is a sturdily built product. It was quick and easy to assemble and put into place. The first comment from my daughter, the artist, was how nice it looked whether it was for a cat or not. I rubbed catnip on the post as some had suggested. Our cat has been happily scratching the new post instead of the entire couch.
WIN, WIN!!
I’ve had this for a couple weeks now and it is working well. Took my cat a little bit to start using correctly (she tried going to the remaining exposed part of the arm). But now she seems to have the picture. I would love if this was in a slightly larger width! That way there is no part of the front side of the couch arm exposed. This is a good product and will definitely save my couch from further damage. Wish I would have had it from the beginning!
UPDATE 7/25/2020: We now own four of these sofa scratchers. (I have four sofas and far too many cats) I’ve had zero functionality issues. My sofa(s) have never felt uneven due to the acrylic base. None of the acrylic bases has ever broken when I’ve placed my furniture on it and then sat on the furniture - all bases are still intact. I did need to buy a piece of plexiglass for the sofa scratcher that I got for my reclining sectional because the “foot” on the sectional sits farther back than on a traditional sofa. I used the base that came with the sofa scratcher as a guide and just cut out a longer base. And it works like a dream. As you can see in the second photo the sofa scratcher comes up higher on the sectional that my other sofa but, for us, this isn’t an issue. I’ll be ordering two more next month for the fourth sofa. These are ingenious and I’m sad that I didn’t think them in to being. If you’re on the fence, seriously, buy them.
Despite having two scratching posts and a cat tree with scratching posts our cats had destroyed the corner of our sofa. The company that made our sofas offers custom slip covers but they are $600 and we just weren’t willing to pay that kind of money right now. Enter this baby here!
I had read all of the reviews and was a little scared that it wouldn’t be sturdy but, it is. It doesn’t fit super tight to the sofa at the top but you can’t tell unless your looking for it - my son didn’t notice it at all until I showed it to him. I got the brown and it’s almost a perfect match color wise.
My cats were a tad leery of it on the first day but after they figured it out and rubbed on it a few times they love it.
The screw holes in my unit were perfectly placed and aligned with the plexiglass base exactly as they should. We’ve had no problems with claws getting stuck or any of that business. Honestly, I wish I’d found it a long time ago so that the corner of my sofa wasn’t a mess. Lesson learned. If you are having problems with your fur babies scratching your furniture, give this a try.
Quality product, now just training the cats to use it
