Project Patio 1-1/2 Inch Deluxe Round Cup Insert Glide End Cap for Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Chairs (32, Black)

Read reviews that mention:

I purchased a couple bags of these foot caps for an extremely reasonable price for my father to install on his wrought iron, antique deck furniture. He inserted the cap and used a wooden mallet around the edges to work them into place. The install took about 30 minutes for 4 chairs and a table. He only had trouble with one, and it wasn't the cap's fault...the metal on the leg had a bump and wasn't completely round. He just took a file to smooth it out a bit, and the cap went on like a charm after that! His chairs look like brand new, and his new composite deck will not suffer scratches and gouges now when we slide those chairs around to drink coffee and watch the winter cardinals! Thanks for reading! Hope it helps!

I don't typically gush over a product, and certainly not over patio furniture glider cups, but these are an exception! I had some trepidation after reading some reviews detailing issues with fit, but once I saw the actual cup insert, I figured out a quick way for installation. True - all wrought iron furniture feet aren't the same, but most are pretty standard, so this method should work. I used a pair of adjustable pliers - the kind you wiggle the handles to make the grip part wider. I then set the glider foot partially in on one side and then snugged in the other side by gently squeezing with the pliers. Because the glider cup's top edge that fits into the interior is beveled, the plastic easily snaps into the foot with minimal pressure. Even with the help of my puppy with her inquisitive nose, inspecting each foot as I went, all 24 glider cups were installed in about 15 minutes. By the way, to get the old white cups out, I used that metal cork screw you find in wine bottle openers, stuck it in the hole and popped those right out. Guess since I already have the opener out, it's time to get a glass of wine and go sit on the deck! :)
These worked very well on two sets of vintage wrought iron patio furniture with worn-out glides. I like the design better than the original white glides because of the lip that covers the rim of the metal foot. Installation is straightforward: remove the old glide using a screwdriver (the directions say pliers, but my way worked fine), then position the new glide on the foot and seat it with a few raps of a rubber mallet. If the glide is loose, then carefully run a single layer of black electrical tape around the edge that fits into the foot; fold over the excess tape into the inner side of the glide, smooth it out, and then install as usual. This fix worked fine for me in three cases.

Update after a few months:
After a few months the glides began falling out of the wrought iron furniture feet, even though the furniture is kept on a dry, shaded patio. Taping the edges has not solved the problem, and nearly all of the glides have failed. Big disappointment.
These served my needs well, better than anything I could find at local hardware stores. I wish Project Patio also made a 1" version.

Size clarification, because I couldn't find sufficient detail when looking at these or other similar chair foot inserts, with the caveat that these numbers are all measurements on a single sample and I know nothing about the variance in the product:
- The top insertion edge is chamfered down to 1.470" OD
- The rib around the middle of the insertion portion is 1.518" OD
- The widest portion of the cup (and therefore the maximum desired OD of the tube into which you're inserting the foot) is 1.690"
- Insertion depth into the tube is 0.280"

With moderate difficulty, I was able to cram these feet into chair tubing with a 1.440" ID. It took a lot of careful alignment and slow pressure (also known as sitting down onto the chair). Some went only part way with my slow pressure, and had to be further persuaded with a rubber mallet. Once I got them fully inserted, they were very solid. The plastic finish is nice, and slides well on my interior hardwood floor without leaving marks.
WHAT A RIPOFF. PAID 28.00 FOR THESE AND THEY ARE CHEAP CHINESE CRAP. JUST TRIED INSTALLING THEM ON AN OLDER BROWN JORDAN PATIO SET AND HALF OF THEM SO FAR CRUMPLED UNDER INSTALLATION PRESSURE USING A RUBBER MALLET AND ARE UNUSABLE. DO NOT BUY THESE THEY ARE WORTHLESS AND WHAT A RIPOFF.
We had out wrought iron furniture cleaned and recoated in a textured black. In order to do so, they removed the plastic white casters that came with the original furniture. These are good replacement parts. I chose black because it blends in better with our furniture than the white would. These have a more visible profile than the original parts - but in black they simply disappear. Some reviews note that they did not fit. We too had this issue on a few legs, but it was from the feet of our furniture having been slightly bent, and/or there was some remaining powder coating material left on the foot. It wasn't the product itself. We did not have success "melting" or warming the caps. Also note that I would not mix these new caps with your old caps on a chair - it will invariably wobble. Just plan on replacing all four casters at once. They seem sturdy & durable, but I have only had them in place for a week.
With a calipers, I measured my wrought iron chair's metal cup openings at 1.47" so I thought these 1.5" slides should work. But I was wrong. It was impossible to get these glides on. I even tried softening them in hot water and that didn't help. I ended up cutting (4) small equidistant slots into the sides of these glides which finally allowed me to get these on. So I would recommend that you make sure you cup's opening is greater than 1.47" otherwise you may struggle like I did.
These inserts fit very well in my older wrought iron furniture with a few taps of a hammer, which I like, because they won't fall out when the furniture is lifted and moved.
I also really like that the inserts lift the furniture feet up off of the damp or wet patio, so the iron is not sitting in water as the original inserts that came with the furniture allowed.... great design.
They seem much stronger than the cheap white ones I was forced to use in the past.
Really a great design.
I highly recommend using these.
