OXO Good Grips 5-lb Food Scale with Pull-Out Display

I'm on a food plan where I weigh and measure ALL my food. So in the last several years I have had EVERY type of food scale and I always go back to this one. OXO is a great brand, and the fact that you can pull the screen out when a plate is large, so you can still see the numbers, is invaluable. The only thing I don't like is the fact that I have to hold down the button to turn it off, the old version didn't do that- I'm guessing it may run the battery out a lot sooner now, but I see that now it's good because it doesn't turn off when you're in the middle of weighing something. Still by far the best food scale I use, and I will get used to turning it off when I am done.

This scale works well but you have to be right over it to easily read the numbers. There are "ghost" numbers that show up if you are at an angle to the readout. I find this slightly inconvenient. Also it doesn't seem to ever turn off by itself (this is both good and bad). I always have to remember to turn it off. I do like the pull out piece so that the weight isn't hidden by a large plate or dish like my old scale.
Product came ahead of time , with batteries included and a small note from the seller , a pleasure to do business like this !
Use it everyday to weigh food. Works well and very accurate. Small and easy to fit on small counter space.
This scale is made from mostly plastic, which is kind of ugly. That's the only bad thing I have to say about this scale.

Accuracy is great. We have a couple of other scales, one from Taylor and one generic brand. The generic scale has questionable accuracy and we're going to dump it now that we have this one. This OXO scale measures exactly the same as the Taylor scale, whether measuring in ounces or grams, so I assume they are both very accurate.

The backlit display is a great feature that makes reading measurements much easier. The pull-out display is also handy at times, though they way the plastic parts fit together is kind of clunky.

The scale uses 4xAAA batteries, which are included. The battery door is a little flimsy and not water resistant (which I would like in a kitchen tool). OK, that is 2 bad things I have to say about this scale.
Update 11/2020: This eats batteries. I thought it would turn itself off - It does, but it must take a very long time because the batteries already died - has been just over a month & I've used it maybe 5 times. You have to remember to turn it off when you are done. My old scale could go years without changing batteries. Annoying & bad design. I downgraded to 3 stars.

Original Review:
This is an excellent 5-pound home scale. It’s accurate & easy to use. I prefer the OXO 11-pound scale – more versatile for baking but this 5—pound scale is good for small baking batches, cakes, coffee, etc.

-Removable Platform for cleaning.
-Buttons are fast-response.
-Screen is easier to read than the old version – it’s now bright on a dark background.
-2 display options for weight: 1/8-ounce & 1-gram
-Weight is displayed in decimals not fractions – more precise.
-The screen pulls out about 4” so can still weigh oversized items.
-Weighs items up to 5 pounds.
-Has tare (can zero out for the bowl, etc.)
-Use 4 AAA batteries, included (the current Amazon listing is wrong – says 2 AAA batteries).
This is a good simple scale that can weigh up to five pounds. Turn it on, wait a few seconds for it to zero out, and then use it. If you need to weigh in a container or measuring cup, put that on first and then turn it on.

This is an OXO product so it's simple to use, has a large display, and you can pull the display away from the base so it's not shadowed by something on the scale. Also, the top comes off so you can put it in the dishwasher. All in all it's a good simple scale.

The biggest complaint is the entire thing is plastic. It feels tough, but a drop from the counter would probably break it.

Overall, this is a good scale with a lot of pleasant features. It feels like it's about $10 overpriced based on all the plastic.
Pros:
-The pull out light up display is a major upgrade from our previous food scale. No more trying to peer at a grey LCD hidden in the shadows under the edge of my dinner plate when portioning out my meal!
-This quickly displays the weight, and the value doesn’t oscillate or drift continuously when I’m trying to get a measurement.
-The platform is large enough for stability but compact enough not to eat up a lot of precious counter space.
-Batteries were included.

Cons:
-It takes 3 seconds to boot up when powered on, which doesn’t bother me, but seems to irk my roommate.
-Although I like that this doesn’t shut itself off until 15 minutes have elapsed since the last change in weight, giving me time to add ingredients or dish out portions without losing my measurement, I do have to remember to power it off when done so it doesn’t eat batteries.
