Prepac -3K Queen Sonoma Platform Storage Bed with 6 Drawers, Espresso

Read reviews that mention:

I almost didn't buy this after reading the negative reviews, but I read through quite a bit of them, and after hearing the tips about how others have reinforced it, I headed to Home Depot, picked up some supplies, and went ahead and ordered. As is, no, this bed won't hold up. What I did, though, was pick up some Titebond III, a whole bunch of metal L brackets, some felt, and reinforced the living daylights out of it. I put the wood glue in EVERY hole during assembly, as well as painted it onto each screw. Once it was all put together, I added 16 L brackets to the frame; 2 at the top and bottom of each corner, and one on each side of the two middle supports, where the drawers go. I just held them in place, marked the holes, and pre-drilled pilot holes.

People were also complaining about the slats not staying in place, and being too noisy, so I bought an entire bolt of thicker felt and glued it to the inside of the metal brackets where the slats sit, and also cut a large piece to cover the slats with (to quiet them, and also to keep the loose splinters from tearing up the underside of my mattress), and I tacked those down with flat head thumb tacks.

Our bed frame is sturdy, we're able to reposition the bed without the drawers falling out or the bed frame becoming 'unsquared', and the only noise the bed makes is during, uhhhh.... bedtime fun, if the frame knocks against the matching headboard. The only complaint people had that I've not yet been able to solve is the gap between the frame and the matching headboard, although I'm thinking of adding a sort of mesh 'hammock' because a.) you won't be able to see it with the pillows on the bed, and b.) if you drop anything down there, it's a NIGHTMARE to get it back.

With all that said, this is not a bed frame for people who plan on moving a lot (the reinforcements kinda negate disassembly), people who rearrange their room often, or for people who don't want to take the extra steps/spend the extra money to make it work.

All the pieces arrived in perfect condition, and with all the necessary hardware. I'm a 5' 5", 115 pound female, so I had to open the boxes outside and carry the pieces in, but I assembled this entire frame, the matching headboard, and 2 matching end tables completely by myself over the span of 3 days. The directions weren't too bad to work with, you'll just need to GO SLOW, READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, and sort/label all the parts and hardware before you get started.

It looks great, and it's the EXACT bed frame/headboard I wanted, so the extra work/cost was worth it to me.

We put the bed together on January 2018. I loved the storage, and although it did feel slightly insecure, I trusted most of the reviews.
Well, after 2 months in the bed had a crack on all 4 corners! It would rock back and forth with the slightest movement. I was afraid to move or get up too quickly. We finally threw it away, as the bed was leaning firmware and would completely break anytime.

It cost us almost $500! We went to the local store and in the clearance section were able to get a bed and a dresser for $800 (wooden, high quality).

I know the 12 drawers seem amazing, but the bed will not last. :(
I hate the fact that I wasted all that money on trash.
The IKEA-style assembly of this bed does, as other reviews indicate, leave something to be desired in terms of sturdiness and creakiness. However, with a couple extra hours and about $25 worth of apparatus from the hardware store, it's easy to build this thing solid as a rock. If you've got the time and the inclination, you'll end up with a surprisingly high quality piece of furniture. (And it doesn't look cheap either.) Total assembly time, with the modifications, was about five hours for a moderately capable guy with a drill and a six-pack of High Life. You'll also need a companion to help hold things together as you're slotting together the bigger bits.

If this sounds intimidating, it's actually pretty easy. Just buy the hardware and things will be pretty intuitive once you're done slogging through the directions and you return to this.

You will need the following from the hardware store. Just ask someone there if you're unfamiliar, and they'll point you right to it:

8 2.5inch/63mm "corner braces"

A box of wood screws that are sized 6x5/8. The corner braces may come with screws, but these will be 3/4in or longer, and will poke through the wood. You're going to use the 6x5/8 screws with the corner braces.

A box of wood screws that are 1.5 inches long. Just get the narrowest ones they have, whatever gauge that may be. If they don't have something 1.5 inches, anything in that neighborhood will do.

15 feet of 1/2in wide heavy duty felt tape. (Get six rolls of the stuff and you won't run out.)

STEP 1: Before you install the slats on which the bed will rest and connect the whole thing together, stick a strip of felt across the top of the two inside support beams. This will help keep the beams from rattling around under your mattress.

STEP 2: Once you have assembled the frame, take the longer wood screws and drill them down through each slat into the support beams, right through the felt. Make it nice and tight.

STEP 4: Cut the felt tape into 3 inch strips and, without removing the wax paper backing, slip them into the slots where the ends of the slats are fitted, using a flathead screwdriver to stuff them in if you have problems. This will tighten the ends so that they don't rattle around in the metal bracket.

STEP 5: Drill the corner braces using the 6x5/8 screws into each of the four corners. It will be obvious where to put them: you're just trying to firm up the connection between the side beams and the ends, so that they don't flex around. I found it helpful to put the top four horizontally (directly above the slats) and bottom four vertically (like an L, inside the opening where the drawer will go). Don't worry that you will impinge on the drawers -- there's room.

(It's also helpful to run some felt tape along the bottom of the bed, especially if you have wood floors, so that you can move it around without scratching.)

Congrats, you now have an extremely solid (and subtly classy looking) bed. And you spent $350, not $800.

Maybe it was just that my expectations were low...but I was very impressed with this bedroom set. My teenage daughter was hooked on getting this and we relented. The quality was very good....and the build was solid and easy to put together. Fasteners all for without issue....and there were no 'translation' issues with the instructions.

Also, I was very impressed with the packing for shipping. Bravo Prepac!!

**2 YEAR UPDATE**

What a difference 2 years makes. :-( I am not sure that the bed is going to last much longer. To be clear, my Daughter is extremely good with her things. There is ZERO abuse here. Normal use.

- The drawers started giving her issues after about a year. They will not close completely now, which is a real pain and looks terrible!

- Now the wooden 'slats' that hold the mattress up are popping out of the track, causing the mattress to drop onto the drawers underneath. Wow!!

It is just unimaginable that a bed would start falling apart and become close to unusable after just over 2 years. VERY disappointing. :-(

I will attempt to contact Prepac under warranty. (5 year limited warranty). I will update with information on how that goes.
Putting this bed frame together, the first screw into one of the pieces broke the piece. We believe it wasn't just a defective part, but poor design because all of the holes for similar use are too close to the edge for the type of material. Amazon made the return experience as easy as they could, but having to re-pack and move around something that heavy with that many pieces is no fun. It's still better in that I didn't have to carry it to and from a store. But in the future I will not take a risk on something this heavy and buy brands I know and have confidence in.
Came without damage it is well packed from the factory. The queen size has one box that is over 70lbs and the Ups driver did not want to fully deliver wanted me to take it off the truck basically he was not happy when I insisted it be delivered properly. That all being said it took 4 hrs one person to assemble the frame - the 12 drawers you about another two hrs. The frame is sturdy and the drawers have solid wood sides and go together quickly. I would recommend the frame is is a good value since you will no longer need a dresser- for smaller rooms it is a big asset.
I followed the instructions concerning the strengthening of the base Called ''Before you get discouraged by the reviews...'' In the comments below, posted by ''kindle Customer''

I feel it is now so much more resistant than if I hadn't done it. Worth the extra steps and the extra time. Minimal to no creaking sounds, the drawers are almost perfect (just one with a 1 cm crack), the wooden planks didn't move when I put the mattress on top (if I hadn't screwed them to the base the planks would've been all over the place). And I added porcelain handles to the drawers: now it's super pretty!

Notes

Do be careful to not use max torque the screws, since it's still not real hard wood tho.

And as of Kindle Customer's ''STEP 5 '' (STEP 5: Drill the corner braces using the 6x5/8 screw ) :

Firstly: DO IT BEFORE STEP 2 ! But the slats in the frame in step 2 yes, but do not screw them just yet; this will allow you to move the ones
close to the border a bit so you have more space to work with the corner braces.

Secondly, when he says: ''I found it helpful to put the top four horizontally (directly above the slats) and BOTTOM FOUR vertically (like an L,
inside the opening where the drawer will go)'' take heed: if you work with an electric drill I advise you to pre-drill the holes for the ''Bottom four'',
at least on the part that is parallel to the floor (look at the drawing). When the bed is fully assembled there won't be enough space for a regular-
sized drill to fit and drill a straight hole for the corner brace in the drawer space.

:D
We purchased this bed after reading good reviews.. We debated between the a similar South Shore model, but ended up going with this one because the reviews were better...

We also purchased the coordinating headboard. After opening the boxes we immediately noticed the pieces of wood were not labeled. We were able to figure it out based on the pictures, but it was annoying to have to muddle through the building process. Neither the bed or the headboard had any labels.

The other thing that really bothers me about this bed is that you can see three large bolt heads along the side of the bed with the drawers... I was immediately disappointed.. The bolt heads are silver 3/4 inch in diameter. The picture of the bolts appears on the front page of the instruction manual but does not show up on the pictures posted on Amazon...

The bed seems sturdy enough and it will be fine for our toddler. Wish we would have purchased the other one though.
I received this product a couple of days ago. During assembly I was Attaching part B2 to B3 and with a sudden shift the two parts broke apart.
I noticed that part B2 cracks easily when attaching with a screw so Part B2 are not made of solid material at all. luckily amazon customer service agent were very efficient to solve the situation and I got a full refund on my purchase.
I have included a pic to show what it looks like .
Bed was simple enough to put together myself in about 2 hours, however the boards to support the mattress were about 4 inches too long and I had to use a saw to shorten them otherwise they were unusable. The frame itself is very sturdy. The drawers are a bit difficult to open from the top as they are rounded and dont have anywhere to grip. Best to open from bottom side of drawer where there is a slight indent to grasp. This makes it fairly difficult for my toddler to open the drawers to get his clothes out which is both good and bad.
Don't even THINK about buying this piece of junk! I purchased this item 9 months ago, and with normal use, it is now reduced to little more than a pile of sawdust. The screws have come lose, the tracks for the drawers have come unscrewed and have pulled out of the particle board, rendering them completely non-functional. The clothing stored in the drawers is covered in sawdust and chunks of particleboard. There is nothing sturdy about this product, despite the fact that I had it professionally assembled at considerable additional cost.
After thirty days, the manufacturer offers replacement or replacement parts ONLY. That might be reasonable in an item or part of an item which has a manufacturing defect, but is TOTALLY USELESS in the case of a bed with this many moving parts, constructed of sawdust and glue. "Ashes to ashes..." comes to mind.
Amazon customer service was of absolutely no use, spouting the company policy at three separate levels, (really?) and denying even an Amazon credit
It';s been four years and bed is holding up. I've had to add screws as the maytress base boards kept on coming off rail.

Tip to manufacturer makes these a little longer.

Also the Drawers hardware is fragile needed to solidify and by some extra hardware.

Overall still very satisfied with the product just a little annoyed I've had to fix to keep it from falling appart.
instructions are not great, bed edges had paint missing, or paint transferred ffrom something else not sure.
EDIT: Bed does not stay sturdy, several bolts that hold it together have just broke the particle board. It is now 1AM and i am having to take my mattress off again and try to somehow tighten it or put new screws in so my bed doesnt fall through.
I love my bed. I love the drawers. Setting up was not too difficult. I did it all by myself, as hubby was busy doing something else. I got all the parts and the bed arrived supper quickly and all in good shape. I had to add a couple of screws here and there, to tie the slats to the middle supports in order to keep the bed from loosing its squareness (if you may call it), as there is nothing really to hold it in place and as soon as you try to re-position the bed, your whole bed gets out of shape and the drawers don't fit right. I also find that the mattress now fits too small and there is a gap between the mattress and the headboard (the head board is from another bed and that might be the reason. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and I would purchase again if I need another bed.

Good product for the Price. Easy assembly and looks sharps, the only it's 4 star is I had to do some minor modifications to the slats.
The slats did not fit into the head and footboards securely and after just a couple nights of use the slats fell out. I shimmed the slats and also counter sunk 1 inch screws through the slats into the the cross joists in the middle of the platform to secure the slats in place. ! also placed duct tape over the screws to avoid them potentially ripping my mattress. All-in-all I am happy with the product and would recommend/buy again.
A lot of parts but very easy to put together. I don't understand why other people gave this a low rating. It is great looks and construction. If you expect to get all hardwood bed platform at this awesome price then you are one lucky person. While this is not all hard wood or even solid wood it is strong , sturdy, and looks nice.
This bed is perfect for a small room to save having a dresser taking up space. It was easy to put together if you take the time to follow the directions. It is easier with two people. It takes about 2 hours to assemble. The bed shipped quickly and arrived in perfect condition. We are very happy with this bed which our teenage son has been using for 2 months now. The drawers are spacious and hold more than his dresser did. It is a very tall bed but my son likes that feature.
