I love the fact that I can change it to make whatever set up I want and it's very easy. The set up was child's play. It's comfortable, it's feels nice. All I would need is to buy 2 more pillows because as u can see, it's missing 2. But that's because I made the ottoman another seat. I love this thing! I would have loved it more in black but oh well.
Ok, let’s be real. If you’re seriously considering getting this couch then you are probably in the market for a modular sectional and your budget is limited. When it comes to furniture, you really get what you pay for, so if you’re considering a budget couch there are going to be some concessions you have to make. A couch is a big purchase so I’m going to try to list out the pros and cons here so you can decide if these particular concessions are something you can live with.
For reference I’ve had this for 6 months and it’s my only couch, and during a recent remodel it was even my bed. I’m a 5’ 7” female around 150lbs with one adult 80lb dog. I’ve also been home pretty much all day every day for the last year due to the pandemic. So this has gotten a fair amount wear.
PROS:
1. Probably the cheapest, or one of the cheapest, fully modular sectionals out there. The versatility and look is similar to companies like Home Reserve and Love Sac, but it’s half the price.
2. Every piece comes with storage big enough for blankets, pillows, books, etc. making it perfect for small spaces. The storage area is also fabric lined and basically a solid box, which gives it points over Home Reserve. The hinges seem high quality and they keep the lid open on their own so it won’t slam down on head or hands.
3. For me, it came WAY faster than estimated. It said I’d have to wait 40 days, I think I waited 1-2 weeks tops. The arms and backs shipped separately and arrived the following day.
4. Since you can easily remove the arms and backs, you can continue to switch pieces around so it wears more evenly. I try to rotate them every week or two.
5. The fabric is much more comfortable than I expected. The pics make it look like that itchy tweed type of upholstery, but it is soft and very comfy.
6. It comes with pegs that hold the pieces together and they are a cinch to pop in and out. I don’t have a problem with it sliding across the carpet, but before I got my rug it would slip and slide all over my hardwood without the pegs attached.
7. When you put all six pieces together, it is pretty much a perfect American full sized bed. I’ve slept on it a lot and had adult guests sleep on it. I’ve even slept on it with my boyfriend and dog, and while not the most comfy, it gets the job done and doesn’t weigh 12 tons like a pull out.
8. This is absolutely perfect for apartments and small spaces. Each piece is very light weight and easy to move around to accommodate innumerous set ups. I have an awkward corner with a bump out and door and this fits pretty perfectly where no other couch would. I love that I can put all the pieces together for a perfect movie/conversation pit or pull the ottomans out for a more “normal” couch set up.
9. It’s very lightweight and since the arms and backs can be easily removed, it was no problem to carry each piece up multiple flights of stairs into my narrow apartment door by myself. I’ll probably be moving out of state soon and I’m so glad I got this couch just because it’s that easy to pack and move.
10. So far this has been really easy to clean. I scotchguarded the heck out of it when I first got it and so far my dog hasn’t had any accidents on it (fingers crossed). But even if he did, I think this would hold up well under the strain of an upholstery shampooer. The fabric and the fact that you can remove the backs and arms makes this super easy to vacuum and get all the dog fur out of it.
11. The design is very smart but simple. If you aren’t afraid of DIY or you have some upholstery experience, this would not be a difficult couch to repair, reupholster, or modify. Honestly, that’s the primary reason I got this particular couch. I know I can easily repair it when it inevitably breaks down, meaning this couch will probably be with me for decades.
CONS:
1. It isn’t the most comfortable. It was a bit firm at first, which I like, but I feel like the foam is breaking down quickly. I rotate the pieces regularly to prevent uneven wear, but several pieces are starting to look askew with the foam starting to slope at the corners. It’s not a big deal, but I’m worried I’ll have to recushion and reupholster this sooner than expected. If you sit too close to the edge of a piece, you can kinda feel your butt hit the wood under the cushion. If you have several pets, have rambunctious kids, or are big and tall- this probably won’t last more than a few years as your sole sofa.
2. As other reviewers have mentioned, the arms and backs slide in with 2 small metal pins. This makes them easy to take apart, but it isn’t the most sturdy option. It’s fine if your couch is up against a wall, but if it is going to be in the middle of a room you will feel the backs and arms wobble as you move. My brother is over 300lbs and has a bad habit of pushing off against the arms of furniture when standing or sitting. I could see somebody like that just demolishing those flimsy pins, ripping them right out.
3. I’m not sure what part is causing it, but some pieces do creak quite a bit when you’re moving around. It’s a little annoying because it sounds like an old pirate ship, but it makes me worried something internally is breaking down as it didn’t do that straight out of the box.
4. The lining on the under side and inside of the storage compartment is pretty poor. It’s flimsy and stapled in right at the very edge, so several areas of the fabric have already slipped or ripped out of the staples. If I don’t restaple it, it’ll start to sag soon.
5. The legs are absolute garbage. They look fine considering you can’t really see them and you don’t have to use them at all if you are ok with it sitting on the ground. But they are very thin, hollow plastic and one even cracked when I twisted it on. They also constantly come loose and spin to the side so I’m always retightening them. I think I’m going to just buy real wooden legs soon.
6. The design is smart and simple, but not common. Each piece is basically a giant upholstered cube and they just don’t make slipcovers like that. I’ve been trying to find a slipcover that would fit for a while now and really can’t. I may have to make my own to help keep dog fur at bay and so I don’t have to vacuum it every week.
7. This isn’t consistently stocked and the backs and arms are not consistently stocked. I wanted to buy additional backs for this so I can make it like a genuine conversation pit, but I don’t know when or if they’ll be back. With other companies making modular sofas, the pieces are pretty much made to order so you know even years from now you can order additional or replacement parts.
Overall, since it’s just me and my dog we use our furniture a lot but don’t abuse it. I’m not sure this is the best option for big families, heavy set or tall people, or people with young kids or multiple pets who will really beat up furniture. At least not as their only or primary sofa if they want it to last for years. Since I don’t fall into one of those categories, I’m still really glad I bought it and think it is worth putting up with the few cons. I love the versatility and overall design so much that I fully plan on repairing it rather than replacing it when the time comes. If I could have afforded one of the expensive customizable modular sofa brands, I probably would have gone that route. But I can’t afford to drop several grand on a similar set up so I’m really glad I found Honbay. I really look forward to coming home at the end of the day and sprawling out in my couch pit with my guy and my dog to watch movies. I love knowing that I can rearrange this into dozens of configurations for just about any size space or situation. Everybody who has seen it loves it and asks where I got it. My mom has even decided to buy this same set up for herself.
The bottom line is this is absolutely, 100% the best fully modular sectional with storage that you can get for the money. If you are on a budget this will be the best home purchase you make in years. I would love to see Honbay stock this more consistently or even expand into other colors and design options because they could take these other modular sofa companies out. Periodt.
This went into a family room for overflow seating
I desperately needed a new couch, but did not have new sectional money. I want a LoveSac. This is a good temporary piece. I love the flexibility of it. It’s literally like a LoveSac but smaller. As you can see in the pictures, the decorative pillows I got are just about as big as the cushions for the back of the couch. I do wish the cushions on the back of the couch would Velcro down so that they wouldn’t move so easily but it’s not a super big problem. The couch is comfortable it’s soft but decently firm.
I hardly ever write reviews, but this company deserves me taking the time. I had a handful of challenges to overcome. I needed to quickly find a couch for my upstairs office that I could use as a bed for guests who were coming the following week. I’m a small female and didn’t have anyone to help. Not only did I need to get a convertible couch quickly, but I also had to be able to move the couch up 2 flights of stairs and assemble it by myself.
The couch came within a couple days of ordering - It was packaged in many medium sized boxes that were light enough for me to easily bring up the 2 flights of stairs. Each box contained everything I needed to put the section together. The instructions were simple and all tools were included. The quality of the material is very good. Since I was adding this to an office, space was limited. I love the way I could configure the couch any way I wanted to fit the room.
The customer service for this company is unparalleled. Amazing! As I was putting the sections together, I realized that there must have been a defect in the footing area on one of the base units because I couldn’t screw any of the feet into it. I contacted the company by email. They responded immediately and sent me another unit within a day! Then, I realized I broke one of the feet trying to force it into the broken unit. I contacted them again, apologizing for the oversight. No questions asked, I had another footing (plus an extra) by the next day. I am so appreciative and impressed with the speed of how everything was handled. I only had a week to take care of everything and they made it effortless.
The design of the couch is well thought, quality is great, easy to transport, easy to assemble, looks nice, and FANTASTIC customer service.
FYI - it’s a very firm couch. I bought a little mattress topper for it and my guests said it was extremely comfortable to sleep. The six sections it comes with equates to a full size bed. (I might consider buying a couple additional base units to keep on hand for the option to make a queen sized bed in the future). The only downside to the design (for some) is that it’s not super quick to convert from couch to bed and back like a pull-out couch would be.. it’s not difficult but I (personally) wouldn’t want to be putting it back and forth every day, as it takes 5-10 minutes to secure pieces together and make up the bed. It is 100% perfect for what I need the couch for and that’s to have a room that I can convert to a comfortable bedroom when guests come over. I really cannot say enough good things. A+
So I just finished setting my couch up and it’s pretty cute and comfy definitely smaller than the picture as far as length for the bed option I’m 5’4 so I don’t mind I’ll probably just order 2 more to complete the look i have a one bedroom high rise apartment it looks pretty nice . the back support pieces are a bit loose I think it would better if it had a 4 hole support rather than 2 for people over 100 pounds but overall alright I guess that’s the only con I can tell it was definitely made from cheap material as far as legs and foam in the couch would be better if it was re stuffable considering I paid 1200 but it looks nice and should last me about a year or so I’ll do another review after 3 weeks with an update
