Rubbermaid NEW 2019 VERSION Step-On Lid Trash Can for Home, Kitchen, and Bathroom Garbage, 13 Gallon, Black

Rubbermaid NEW 2019 VERSION Step-On Lid Trash Can for Home, Kitchen, and Bathroom Garbage, 13 Gallon, Black

Read reviews that mention:

Our cat has gotten very aggressive about food lately. If she were a bear in a national park they would have shot her by now. We ordered this trash can and it is great!

Benefits: Rectangular shape fits against our kitchen island better than a round can. No assembly other than snapping the lid on. Plastic is quieter than a metal lid when the lid hits the countertop behind it. Silver pedal looks cool. Large; several inches taller than our last trash can. Fits regular 13-gallon bags. Rim has bag holding clamps/handles so the trash bag can't slide down. Lid opens easily with your foot or if need be your hand. Lid stays open if you want it to (which I wanted for periods of cooking and cleaning). Cat can't get in it!

Cons: Ain't no cons, this is a twenty dollar trash can mailed to your door in 2 days for free shipping!

UPDATE 12/2/15: There is one con. Tonight I left some turkey on the kitchen island and the cat jumped on the lidded trashcan to get to it. It might be time to get a new cat.

Notes on my photo: Our old 13-gallon can is in front with the new can behind it for perspective.

UPDATE: 4/24/2019 Four years, a move, and a new house later and this trash can is still in our kitchen.

The container itself is decent quality, and holds a standard 13 gallon-tall kitchen bag just right. The retaining ring for the bag is a little fidgety to use, and occasionally tears the bag.

The biggest annoyance is the foot pedal/lid mechanism. The foot pedal actuates a metal rod to lift the lid. The trouble is the "hinge", if you could even call it that, is two tiny, short plastic tabs that "flex fit" to hold the lid. If you press the foot pedal with anything more than the most dainty of force, the lid "hinge" just gives way, ripping the lid off. Even bumping the lid with trash cause the thin hinge pegs to give way.

Every time you're left with the pleasure of leaning into your stinky trash can, trying to line of the pins and snap them back in - only knowing it'll probably be a day before it happens again.

Also, you can't put it flat against a wall, because the lid swings back further than the backside of the can when open - you have to leave clearance.
This can, and its pedal mechanism (dare I call it that), are 100% plastic. The plastic 'rod' that is meant to transfer the energy of a step on the pedal to the lid is actually connected to NEITHER. It continually falls out of the hole where it is intended to rest (see picture), which means that it falls away from the back of the trash can and detaches from the pedal. I would love it if the lid functioned, but, as it is, this is the only trash can I could find under $100 that is narrow enough to fit my space (10.25" wide) so I will keep it and use it without the lid and pedal.

If your space can accommodate any wider a can, don't waste your money on this poorly-designed, poorly-made garbage (can).
Update:

It has a flawed lid design. The lid literally falls off one hinge every use. Sick of it! I have resorted to adding wire to each side with glue to hold the lid on

It's ok. I would not call this new and improved. New and different problems. It is an ok trash can but has some design issues. The old one the middle of the lid clips would wear out and eventually fail. I bought this one to avoid the issue and thought the new way bags were put in would help. I like how the bags are supposed to be held but the side clips or hold areas do not go back in to place and the plastic pops up. This hold the lid ajar until you have enough trash to hold down the bag holder. This wouldn't be a big deal if the stupid lid wouldn't fall off due to this. It moves the lid slightly off and the stupid thing falls off the push rod. Every other time I have to re attach the lid. It makes it very annoying.
Great garbage can does exactly what its supposed to and seems to keep the smell in and my favorite part is it holds the bag on th inside so it doesn't show or slip! Overall a great buy
I was surprised that it arrived earlier than expected but Pleasantly so.
I had long ago, broke the little thingies that held the lid onto my Hefty Trash (White) because in the summer, if we bought fruit (Like Bananas) we always got gnats and it seemed the white enabled them to flourish (I hated that) so I needed to get a new one (finally saved up enough to get one since my husband passed a year ago on Jan 18th).
I was hoping yet tentative about that but let me tell you all ... NO gnats of any kind! I am 74 so it took me a tiny bit of time to figure out the difference in the bag configuration (I'm sure young folks would figure it out instantly) but I am so happy with it and Rubbermaid most assuredly made me VERY happy with this Trash can. I Love it :) and folks, it is VERY well worth 27 dollars!!! My frustration and aggravation levels are ZERO with this So to me, it is WELL worth it and MORE!!!
The holes to connect the lid aren't spaced properly so, when it is connected on one side, it is disconnected on the other, and vice versa. As a result, when you step on the pedal, it only opens one side of the lid part way. Belongs in the trash!

Update: The seller was very responsive and promptly approved my refund request. I have no issues with the seller, it is the product itself that is substandard.
Please ignore All reviews. Seem to be planted ones. The product quality is ordinary and hinge design is poor. The lid comes off with each press on the foot pedal. I had to make a modification myself to make it usable. This is not acceptable from an item at this price. I did contact the seller, who just gave an evasive answer that they will approach the manufacturer. Avoid this product as well as seller.

22/02/18 - Received a call from the seller a week ago with false promises for follow up with the manufacturer. No further inputs.

I put this garbage bin outside my door for dog waste. It has lasted snow and rain and the contents are always dry and the foot mechanism is still working like a charm/ not rusting or getting stuck at all! Im impressed.
I was disappointed to find out that it wasn't 53 liter but 43 liter. Thats why I didn't rate it higher. Delivery was excellent.
Looks great, very durable, love the way the lock works on the bag, stays still. Leg button is awesome perfect when hands are dirty no need to touch the lid.
We had one for a very long time and now purchased a second to use for recycling only. These are sturdy, work easily and clean up well too. Good buy.

My previous can lasted over 20 years so I knew I wanted the exact same one. I was happy to have found it on Amazon! The shipping was fast and the can is just perfect! Fits behind my door in my kitchen and is so easy to clean.
Great design and so functional.
I always like rubbermaid, the only issue I have with this is the lid sometime dislocate when I open it. I have to reattach it a few times.

Came out of the box with a lid that doesn't properly connect to the main body -- kept falling off. I had to use two household screws to extend the "hinge" into the plastic and now it works. Didn't bother sending it back due to the large size of the item.

Pretty durable. Use it for recycling
It was broken when recieved. I had originally planned to return it for another reason but was about to change my mind but on unwrapping it, it was broken anyway.
