I gave this 5 stars for the ECONOMY of it, but feel I should clarify what this IS and IS NOT. THIS IS VERY BASIC ECONOMY LIGHTWEIGHT STORAGE AT A CHEAP PRICEPOINT.
This is NOT the same as the Ikea Kallax or Walmart Better Homes and Gardens level of reinforced sturdiness for holding heavier weighted items like books, nor are the interior cube dimensions compatible with those brands of 13" or 12" fabric cubes.
This IS: These shelves are ideal for lighter-weight storage such as baby/toddler clothes or kids toys--- or in our case, the kids wanted LEGO display shelves for their 10x10 base-plate scenes and quick storage of random toys like Hotwheels, etc. When purchasing fabric cubes be sure they are the 10" or 11" dimensions. I found that "Mainstays" collapsible fabric cubes at Walmart fit nicely in here, but even better score was when I found some 11" cubes at our Dollar Tree (bargain!). These ClosetMaid Cubeicals benefit from being anchored into a stud on the wall, rather than being used as stand-alone/free-standing shelves. The 9 cube = 3x3 could be tolerable/"okay" freestanding if you absolutely insist, but I also bought some 1x4 and those must be secured or they sway and wobble pretty noticeably.
A few miscellaneous notes: The 5 "shelf backings" arrive with a permanent creased fold down the middle-for shipping, and are made of thin poster-board like material. If this crease bothers you, just buy posterboard and cut your own backs to tack in. Or if you want something thicker, I imagine "foamboard" from the school supply aisle works great if you score it with a box-cutter.
When I tacked in the shelf backings, one of my shelves tore/split even though the tack went in straight and precisely where it should have. I chose to use wood glue to repair the piece rather than return the shelves.
This was fast and easy to assemble, the instructions were clear. We've had the shelves for two days now, so I may update this later on to report on durability.
Why I gave it 5 stars: The shelves fit our current purpose wonderfully, and I love that when I don't require heavy duty weight bearing shelves, there is a very economical option I can snatch up. Eventually I do want the heavy duty, larger 13" cube shelves from a major brand, but for now I appreciated paying less than forty bucks to have a 9 cube = 3x3 shelf, rather than eighty or one twenty bucks for 3x3 from the other brands. Later on, I will pay more to buy some that are textbook sturdy and can do more things.
The photos: You will notice I originally had 12" cubes (white with blue petals), and realized I needed the 10 or 11" cubes (beige/gray). Also I did show one photo of my 4 cube storage here, even though this is my review for the 9 cube (3x3).
These are good quality for the price. Totally transformed my space!
If I could give negative stars I would. What am I supposed to put this together with? Hopes and dreams? No back boards came in the box and neither did the directions or nails to put it together. Not to mention a huge chunk missing out of the corner. Not happy in the slightest.
This was such a rip off! I could have gotten the same product at target or Walmart for like $15. I am extremely disappointed. I would be sending it back but I don’t want to take the time to take it apart. So no buy this unless you like being ripped off! It is small and horrible quality. Oh! And it was damaged!!! So POed I wasted my money on this. I should have known when I saw the cracks to just send it back. So disappointed. Horrible purchase! For the price the screw should be more hidden and not just with a crappy piece of plastic that could fall off.
Decent product, not hard to assemble. What has made me pretty upset is that it only comes with 5 of the back panels. The one I purchased has 9 cubicles. Now I have to decide which parts I'm going to leave uncovered. I think that's pretty dumb.
I absolutely love these cube organizers. I've tried the one from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, the one from Walmart, and this one. For the price, this one is my favorite. It's more sturdy that the Walmart one and at least $10 cheaper the the BBB one when I checked. It's so much cheaper than the IKEA ones that I wouldn't even consider those.
These are just so handy to have around. You can use them with the bins for storage, without for displaying small items, or mix it up and do both.
Having put these together a couple of times. I do have a couple tips. First of all, if you're going to be by yourself, put it together fairly close to its final destination. These things are pretty hefty! Also, you definitely want an electric screwdriver to do this. I did the first one without mine, and as ashamed as I am to admit it, the construction project turned into 45 minutes of cardio! Lastly, whether you're going to display things or use all bins, it's a good idea to go ahead and put those cardboard backing things on with plenty of nails...you'll know what I mean if you buy it and get it home. It's hard to believe, but it does make a big difference in stability.
In case you can't tell already, I highly recommend this product! I just wish I had somewhere else to put another one!
They're not so well made. The caps to go over the screws are terrible to install, don't stay in, and make it sit uneven. It also comes with a crappy little plastic elbow is supposed to be drilled into the wall to keep it steady since it's so poorly balanced.
The materials are cheap. It's just particle board and the backs are flimsy cardboard.
We ordered 2. One came packaged tightly and was completely undamaged. The other was put into a largely oversized box with a bunch of paper and was badly damaged in transit. That was bizarre because both were ordered at the same time and showed up on the same day so it didn't really make sense to ship them separately and differently like that. Amazon gave me a full refund for that one since they're out of stock, so that made me feel much better since I just needed to repair the damage from shipping with some glue and stain pens.
And it took several weeks to ship.
All of those things said, the reason I still give this item 3 stars is because it really does look nice and is exactly what we needed for my sons books and living room toys. I didn't use the plastic arms, and I took the caps off the bottom so it sits more flat. If I had to attach to a wall, I wouldn't use the crappy plastic arm anyway I would feel much better with a pair of steel elbows on each.
